"Putin doesn't want to follow the lead of those who are trying to poison our relations to the point of no return", he told reporters.

The White House played down the danger, saying that the photographer and his equipment were subjected to a security screening before he and it entered the White House grounds.

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-South Carolina, reacted to the meeting with a warning, urging Trump to be careful and aware of who Lavrov represents. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has said that Syria could be one area where the US and Russian Federation could work together to rebuild trust. He says he hopes the current "fireworks" will evolve into an acceptable agreement for all sides, including Syria's opposition.

U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein, the top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, told reporters it was her "understanding" Comey had been seeking more resources for his investigation into the tangled Russian Federation controversy.

WH furious over Russian government photos of Trump meeting with Lavrov/Kislyak. Asked about Comey's firing at a briefing later Wednesday, Lavrov said it was an internal USA matter and not for him to discuss.

He's brushing off the questions as "noise" about Russians' contacts with people in Trump's campaign.

"Of course, the fact that the talks are held is rather positive", he said.

Lavrov notes that Trump dismisses the matter as "false news".
