It was bombs away for Blue Jays big gunners Jose Bautista and Kendrys Morales Saturday afternoon at the Rogers Centre. Miranda matched a career high with eight strikeouts...lefty reliever Marc Rzepczynski got two outs in the eighth inning for his 19th consecutive scoreless outing dating to previous year.
Toronto Blue Jays' Justin Smoak (14) celebrates his two-run home run against the Seattle Mariners with Jose Bautista during sixth-inning baseball game action in Toronto, Sunday, May 14, 2017.
The Mariners have lost four straight following a four-game winning streak.
The Blue Jays outhit the Mariners 9-6 in the opener of the four-game series.
Suddenly, a team that began 2-11 is now 15-21 and doing so without three-fifths of its starting infield and the same percentage of its starting pitching staff also on the disabled list.
"We'll probably have to bring somebody up for tomorrow's game", Servais said. We've still got to go out there and play the game. "It's hard to imagine you could ever plan for anything like this".
"The guy just knows how to pitch", Smoak said. "We'll have a better idea tonight or tomorrow of where he's at". Martin said the injury, which doesn't cause pain but limits mobility and strength, may be an aggravation of a similar issue he dealt with in Spring Training.
"You just deal with it", Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said Thursday. "We're trying to capitalize on them not having their entire rotation". Toronto finished with nine hits.
And with a four-game home-and-home set coming up against the Atlanta Braves, the team with the second-worst record in the majors, the Blue Jays' immediate future appears rosy. The Jays scored five runs in their half of the seventh to break a 1-1 tie. "He's a hot hitter right now and it was not a quality pitch in that situation". He was at 64 pitches after 5 and I'd have taken him out there, but Gibby had him start the 6th.
First things first, for a Jays team that can not afford to look too far ahead, nor get over confident with any opponent, was Thursday's assignment. Any time I hit them they're always special. Jean Segura led off with a double and Cruz drilled a one-out homer into the center field party deck, his eighth.
Smoak believes a big key is being sprung from the platoon at first becoming mostly an every-day starter. Gave credit to hitting coach Brook Jacoby for the adjustment he's made. It was Pillar's fifth homer of the season and Toronto's fifth straight victory.
Kipnis drove in another run in the third inning and Liriano followed with a walk to Edwin Encarnacion to load the bases. Pazos then hit Toronto catcher Luke Maile in the right arm to load the bases.
Earlier Saturday, the Mariners said right-hander Hisashi Iwakuma is expected of miss four to six weeks because of a sore shoulder.
The amount of injuries the Blue Jays have is no longer something they need to worry about.
The runs were charged to Liriano, who allowed five hits, seven earned runs and three walks.
Seattle's starter could be Dillon Overton, who was the team's starter on Sunday. He has reached base in seven straight games and has provided the answer to the Blue Jays' needs in the leadoff spot. A blister on the right middle finger and a broken fingernail on the same finger have limited him to one inning pitched since April 16 between stints on the DL. Toronto is also 0-6 in their last six during game four of a series, the under is 13-5-1 in the Jays' last 19 home games versus a left-handed starter.
Jarrod Dyson hit his first home run of the season Sunday in the Mariners' loss to the Blue Jays. Roberto Osuna (2-0) worked one inning of relief for the win.
Dyson tied the game when he led off the top of the seventh against Toronto reliever Dominic Leone with his first homer of the season.
