Game 3 is on Wednesday.
A higher shot volume is essential, but it might not mean much if the Penguins can't do a better job of taking away the sight lines of Senators goaltender Craig Anderson.
Penguins fans, take heart. The star centre had 11 points in seven games prior to the injury, whereas in the five games since he has scored no goals and has only three assists. Ron Hainsey hit the crossbar early and Patric Hornqvist dinged the left post but that's as close as Pittsburgh would get to slipping one by Anderson. They expect nothing but the best from the Penguins in Game 2 Monday.
After the game, a reporter told Ottawa head coach Guy Boucher that people on Twitter were talking about how it was an ugly game.
NEW YORK (AP) - The Rangers have had a tough time closing out against the Senators in Ottawa, a challenge they're eager to take on again. Essentially, this style works when the puck carrier beats the initial forechecker then runs into the wall that is awaiting him.
So did Kessel's Pittsburgh Penguins in an Eastern Conference final that has pitted patience vs. passion, with some frustration sprinkled in for good measure. "We won't get too excited". Ottawa also knows it has the Penguins' full attention.
And keep the lead, while you're at it.
The Penguins came out with their most lackluster effort of the postseason. Bobby Ryan scored the victor for Ottawa 4:59 into the first overtime period. Who is going to force the other team to change more?
"I thought we managed the first period really well". With Trevor Daley out because of a lower-body injury - he has skated on his own for the past two days - the No. 1 power play is without a natural quarterback.
The Penguins almost got on the board early in the first period.
As for Fleury, he was hardly tested as much, though he did make one marvelous save on Ottawa's Ryan Dzingel, who was alone at the side of the net but could not get it over the goal line.
These struggles are nothing new, unfortunately.
It is a game played in the mud and it has carried them into the middle of May. That's a significant improvement from Saturday, when the Senators were on the hook for five penalty kills.
Game 3 is Tuesday night in Nashville. Coach Mike Sullivan arrived 17 months ago stressing the need for his roster dotted with highly skilled players needs to rid itself of bad habits, namely trying to score a highlight reel goal instead of just putting the puck on net and seeing what happens next.
They need to get out of that mindset quickly.
The only goal of the game came from the rabid Phil Kessel, who was talking to himself all night and even got into a fight with his linemate, Evgeni Malkin, on the bench. The Penguins had 17 giveaways in the loss and didn't look sharp following a 7-game battle with the Capitals. "Obviously it's an emotional game, there's ups and downs, and we found a way".
The opportunities were there for Crosby all night Saturday, but everything was just slightly off. I think our players get a kick out of him, quite honestly.
Resiliency may be the Penguins' greatest character trait.
This time, it eventually caught up to them.
"We understand, they wait", Malkin said. If anything, his outburst was simply the physical manifestation of Sullivan's order to stop looking for the ideal shot and just start peppering Anderson looking for a sliver of space.
