'Of course the Australians have better healthcare than we do - everybody does'

"We had a great telephone call".

But with Trump battling to dismantle Obamacare, that was a remark for a domestic political audience.

And in his later dinner speech the president did say the phone call was nice but a bit testy. "Everybody's going to be taken care of much better than they're being taken care of now".

The pair convened on a decommissioned aircraft carrier, the Intrepid, to mark the 75th Anniversary of the Battle of the Coral Sea-and to steady the long-standing alliance after relations soured at a time of growing tensions in the Asia-Pacific. "Right now Obamacare is failing", Trump said as he sat with Turnbull aboard the USS Intrepid after his fresh Congressional win.

Not everyone was happy with the homecoming, with protests planned against the Republican president in the heavily Democratic city.

During the call, Trump told Turnbull that the agreement would hurt his new administration politically and the President also called the deal "dumb". The call aroused criticism and raised questions about his diplomatic skills.

The self-proclaimed socialist senator believes the USA should use Australia's universal health care system as a model for repealing and replacing Obamacare. The measure has yet to come before the Senate. Trump was reportedly irritated because he was expected to honour a deal made by his predecessor Barack Obama to accept more than 1,200 refugees.

"We get along great".

Regardless, Trump is correct that the USA lags behind other countries in health care service among industrialized nations.

"We can put the refugee deal behind you and move on", Turnbull said on Thursday.

"I think it's a great way to communicate, and it's a modern way to communicate", he said.

Turnbull chuckled and said: "Young at heart".

Brendan Thomas-Noone, a research fellow at the United States Studies Center in Sydney, said whether Australians believed Turnbull had been successful in balancing those needs would likely be shaped by the prime minister's future decisions on Australia's commitment to America's various military operations.

"We've been allies for 99 years", said Trump.
