The importance of transition for the Celtics and Wizards

17 Mai 2017

It was that kind of night for the Celtics. In that regard, the Wizards will look to get back to putting the beatdown on Boston like they have for the majority of the series, and that includes some of the games they lost.

The home team has won all five games in this series between Boston and Washington, with the average margin of victory at a tidy 18.0 points per game.

The Boston Celtics, holding home-court serve, used an early 16-0 run and never looked back, cruising to a 123-101 blowout of the Washington Wizards in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference semifinals Wednesday night. "But, you know, sometimes you feel a lot better when you make shots at the rate we did".

So far, that home court advantage has been just that with the victor in each of the first five games being the home team.

There were so many heroes in Game 5 for the Celtics.

The Celtics big man dominated on both ends of the floor, altering and blocking shots at the rim. "Hopefully, we can come back and play a much better game Friday".

It's a question that's followed the C's since the Hawks knocked them out in the first round of last year's playoffs. And their length and athleticism was a real factor in the last two games. "That's the goal, and that's what we got to do".

I'm not exactly sure when and why the "two-way player" became distinguishable from every other National Basketball Association player, since everyone plays both ways. Beantown shot 65 percent from the floor and 43 percent from beyond the arc after the first 12 minutes. Tonight, the primary beneficiary was Avery Bradley, who scored a playoff career-high 29 points, nearly all of which came on wide-open shots.

In Game 5 between the Wizards and Celtics, there was one point where the game was tied, and one point where there was a lead change.

After the Celtics' series-clinching, 22-point win at Chicago in the first round, Bradley was asked about some outward emotion he exhibited during the game. The betting line reflects how John Wall and Co. have played in Washington compared to Boston, and the difference is stark.

LeBron James and his six NBA All-Defensive Team selections still gets left off of some "two-way player" rankings - although he is ironically often described as the best all-around player in the world. He kept playing basketball.

"If they do adjust (and) they (need) to play a more, I guess, normal type of defense, I think we can take advantage of that", Thomas said. He does a hell of a job on him.

"I mean, that was definitely expected".

"It can't just be Isaiah Thomas every night", Bradley revealed.

You can typically determine how the Celtics will fare based on three very basic stats - threes, rebounds and turnovers. In Boston's three wins, Wall has a plus/minus of minus-17. He also dished out nine assists. He played facilitator and even set some great screens that led to easy shots. "I do it all".

In game five the Celtics not only came in with the mentality that this was the biggest game of their careers, but they put together the best game this team has every played together. Thomas has averaged 20 points and eight assists on 38.9% shooting in those games.

Oubre will receive a much warmer welcome when the Wizards return to the friendly confines of Verizon Center for Friday's Game 6. We know it's going to be a hostile environment.
