"Notes that were taken around the time of the conversation would be, I think, very powerful evidence of what took place during those conversations", he said. The Times reported that while it did not view a copy of the memo, parts of it were read by one of Comey's associates to a Times reporter.
"I hope you can see your way clear to letting this go, to letting Flynn go", the memo quotes Trump as saying, according to the newspaper. I suspect we may hear more from you tonight. Rep. Adam Schiff, a member of the House Intelligence Committee, has also asked Comey to publicly testify. But Comey did not say anything to Trump about limiting the investigation, replying, "I agree he is a good guy".
The White House has denied the report in a statement.
"The stories of the last week raise serious questions about whether the president respects the independence of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and law enforcement authorities".
And one of the back-and-forths has been, there was this conversation between Comey and the president in which the president said, "I want your loyalty". At the time, the investigations into Russia's meddling and Mr. Flynn's Russian connections were ramping up.
Writing the memo was "not out of character", especially if he was concerned about the legality or moral issues, according to a former Justice Department official.
JOHN YANG: Matt Apuzzo, as you say, this could be a dramatic turning point in this relationship and what is going on between the two men, between President Trump and James Comey.
Meadows also told reporters that if memos exist, Congress should have access to them.
Comey was abruptly fired May 9 and learned of the dismissal as he was giving a talk in Los Angeles.
According to the Times, Comey agreed that Flynn was a "good guy", but did not address closing the investigation. The source said it was not common practice for Comey to document conversations with senior officials unless he thought it was significant. The FBI concluded after an investigation previous year that there were no grounds to pursue any charges against Clinton. When the meeting ended, Trump told those present - including Pence and Attorney General Jeff Sessions - to leave the room except for Comey.
"We're a long ways from a conviction - the fact that we simply have a headline in The New York Times".
SHAPIRO: FBI Director James Comey apparently wrote a memo just after that February meeting with the president.
Add to that the fact that Trump, by his own admission, was thinking about the Russian Federation investigation and his annoyance over it when he later fired Comey.
But the White House has provided differing accounts of the firing. But the White House has obstructed our congressional investigation, covered up for General Flynn, and refused to provide a single document.
Controversy over Russian Federation has also laid bare sharp divisions between the White House and USA intelligence agencies, which concluded in January that Russian Federation had tried to influence the election in Trump's favor. He called for the appointment of a special prosecutor to investigate.
"As close as (Sen.) Mark Warner and I have worked with the director over the past many months now, I actually believed the director might have told us if there had been a request like that (from Trump)".
May 12, 2017: Trump tweets that Comey "better hope that there are no "tapes" of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press!"
Still, it is one thing for Trump to be indignant about this big picture and another thing to reject all the evidence that Russian Federation did indeed try to help Trump by hurting Hillary Clinton with massive leaking of embarrassing information.
The administration spent the first half of Tuesday defending Trump's disclosure of classified information to senior Russian officials.
Flynn's resignation came hours after it was reported that the Justice Department had warned the White House weeks earlier that Flynn could be vulnerable to blackmail for contacts with Kislyak before Trump took office on 20 January.
