Hurt, 2 Arrested in Violence Outside Turkish Embassy in DC

In footage shot by VOA Turkish, a gray-haired man with a megaphone is seen being kicked in the face, more than once, while lying on the sidewalk. USA police officers are seen attempting to separate the two parties.

Metropolitan police said two people were arrested.

"We weren't doing anything wrong", a pro-Erdogan demonstrator, Mustafa Dikilitas, told ABC television.

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Donald Trump personally appealed to FBI Director James Comey to abandon the bureau's investigation into National Security Adviser Michael Flynn, according to notes Comey wrote after the meeting.

An anti-Erdogan protester said that supporters of the president suddenly charged at them.

"Someone was beating me in the head nonstop, and I thought, 'Ok, I'm on the ground already, what is the goal to beat me?'"

Erdogan's bodyguards have been accused of disturbances on USA soil in the past.

The presidents of the United States and Turkey vowed Tuesday to fix a relationship battered by years of disputes over Syria's civil war and its various fighting groups, even as they broached a new disagreement over USA plans to arm Kurdish fighters. Turkey considers these militias as an extension of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party called People's Protection Units, which has been labeled as a terrorist group by Europe, Turkey and the U.S.

The official says President Trump then brought up Brunson a third time.

Erdogan issued a statement afterward congratulating Trump for his presidential election victory. He emphasised that Washington would "offer support to Ankara" in its fight against terrorism and "reinvigorate trade and commercial ties".

"President Trump and Vice President Pence have yet again demonstrated that they are "defenders of the church" focused intently upon religious liberty here but also on religious liberty overseas", Dobson said in a statement.

And Erdogan remains angry that the United States continues to host Islamic preacher Fethullah Gulen, a former ally who chose exile in Pennsylvania and who has now been accused of masterminding last year's bloody attempted coup in his homeland.

At their White House meeting earlier, Trump and Erdogan had nice things to say about each other - even after the US chose to arm Kurdish fighters in Syria.

Turkey and the United States are key North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies, but their relationship has been complicated by the U.S.'s strategy on Syria and Washington's refusal to extradite a Turkish cleric, who stands behind the failed coup in Turkey previous year.
