Freeman hurt; Braves ride big inning to win over Blue Jays

19 Mai 2017

That was enough on a tough night for the big right-hander.

Atlanta Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman left Wednesday's game against the Toronto Blue Jays with a wrist injury.

The Braves were upset about Freeman being hit, and the Blue Jays obviously weren't happy about the way the interleague series was going.

Chalk this particular over/under potentially as one such scenario, considering the two hurlers that are set to go at it in tonight's series opener between the Rays and Indians. "We've been swinging the bats well and the pitching is coming around".

Unfortunately for the Braves, Colon hasn't really improved, with his ERA actually rising after each of his prior four outings, over which he's allowed at least four runs apiece. "He may need a couple of more days", Gibbons said.

Everything, that is, except for Colon's stomach. If I'm not locating the fastball down and away, it's not going to be a good day. I talk all the time about passing the baton and keeping the line moving. It's just exhausted. We've seen it from him enough. "He'd done his job at that point".

"That was good", Kemp said.

"You could even see it from left field", Kemp said. Pillar is known for making contact, as many players can do, but not everyone is able to drive the ball with much consistency.

Smoak hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning, turning around a 1-2 fastball that registered 99 miles per hour for his ninth of the season, and Foltynewicz allowed a fifth-inning run to score on a wild pitch. He walked in his final plate appearance.

"The home runs got us today", Servais said.

Two batters later, Atlanta knocked Bolsinger (0-2) from the game on an RBI single from Adonis Garcia. Shortstop Dansby Swanson also had two RBIs.

In the eighth inning, with the Jays trailing 6-5, Travis was asked to lay down a bunt in an attempt to move pinch runner Darrell Ceciliani from second to third and Justin Smoak from first to second, with none out. While that may not functionally be predictive of his ability to pitch in high leverage innings in 2017, it has certainly given John Gibbons the confidence to use Smith in those situations. "I didn't think he had his good curveball, which is kind of vital to him".

He walked three in 1 2/3 innings before being replaced in the seventh by Jason Motte, who gave up the second RBI double of the game by Devon Travis. The Braves signed this old pitcher, who is obviously running low on his batteries to save his career, to simply buy a little more time for the young pitching prospects who are nearly ready for the big leagues.

The Braves (18-22) took a 3-0 lead in the fourth on a two-out, RBI single by Jace Peterson.

"He was feeling a little puny, if that's possible".

John Gibbons thought Marcus Stroman might be the ideal choice to stop the Toronto Blue Jays' skid after three straight losses to Atlanta. Though they're less likely than most to keep that up, any contributions they make until Troy Tulowitzki and Josh Donaldson return will help the Jays get back in contention. Tulowitzki, recovering from a hamstring injury, again played in a minor-league game on Tuesday in Florida.
