Grunge rock icon Chris Cornell dies at 52

19 Mai 2017

Cornell died at the MGM Grand Detroit hotel, Woody said.

Cornell, along with some of the early-90s' pioneering garage rock outfits, had a singular voice in rock and psychedelia.

Reports have emerged that rocker Chris Cornell seemed to be not "mentally present" during his final show in Detroit last night, shortly before the Soundgarden lead singer was found dead in his hotel room.

Bumbery called the death "sudden and unexpected" and said his wife and family are in shock. While Nirvana may have been the band that broke grunge into the mainstream, Soundgarden was the first to sign onto a major label. Many in Columbus were looking forward to seeing the grunge rock pioneers at Rock on the Range Friday.

Gavin Rossdale of Bush, Dave Navarro of Jane's Addiction and Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin all wrote about Cornell.

Elsewhere, Bush frontman Gavin Rossdale said he was in "total shock" after hear of his passing.

His voice signaled great urgency and tremendous physicality - which makes the 52-year-old singer's suicide, mere hours after a high-spirited Soundgarden concert in Detroit on Wednesday, such a surprise. It included hit singles Spoonman, Fell on Black Days, Black Hole Sun, My Wave and The Day I Tried to Live. "They would like to thank his fans for their continuous love and loyalty and ask that their privacy be respected at this time". "It's what we missed when we weren't a band", Cornell had posted on Facebook on Tuesday.

Two Detroit newspapers had earlier cited a police spokesman Cornell was found with "a band around his neck". "There's no doubt that Soundgarden's music is very dark and melancholy at times".

Chris Cornell is grunge royalty, and will forever be remembered as so.

The School's Out singer said on Thursday: "Chris Cornell, in our circle, was known as The Voice because he had the best voice in rock and roll".

"It occurred to me that there was no guarantee that as a musician I would ever have any kind of financial success, but I was fine with that". We communicated via email at one point because he was on my short list of singers that I reached out to during the making of Shout! The darkness I knew.

He also discussed having the same name as an alleged jihadist. "All the friends that I had were still (messed) up with drugs and were people that I didn't really have anything in common with", he said.

One Republic tweeted: "A friend of our team and us died last night".
