Mike Huckabee calls Roger Ailes a 'genius'

Fox News creator Roger Ailes, who died at 77 on Thursday morning, had a vision for the network as not just a stridently, proudly conservative news network - that cheeky "Fair and Balanced" slogan notwithstanding - but a sort of bizarro, parallel universe.

"In the years I worked with Ailes he was a great mentor, deeply patriotic, committed to Fox News and really anxious about America".

NY magazine reports that Luhn, a former Fox News booker, has told investigators in the internal probe that she was harassed by Ailes for more than 20 years and that Fox News knew about it. She called him "a loving husband" and "patriot".

While a cause of death has not been reported, Palm Beach police say Ailes had fallen and hit his head and was "seriously bleeding eight days before [his] death".

It was unclear from the report who dialed 911 or whether the man was taken to the hospital.

Former Chairman and CEO of the Fox News Network Roger Ailes participates in the "America's Best Leaders: How do they lead?"

Elizabeth Ailes described him as "a loyal friend to many" in her statement on his death.

"A brilliant broadcaster, Roger played a huge role in shaping America's media over the last thirty years".

"Today television news is watched more often than people read newspapers, than people listen to the radio, than people read or gather any other form of communication", the memo read. CNN confirmed the report, saying they spoke to Fox News anchor Sean Hannity. And if those facts are lost in praise about the ways Ailes "forever changed the political and the media landscape", or reduced to "kind of a sad ending to an incredible career", it will be another message that those women don't matter.

Fox News formally announced news of his passing in an on-air segment on Thursday morning.

The network that the Murdochs owned but that he built has in the previous year been buffeted by sexual harassment scandals - allegations that forced Ailes himself out last summer and later claimed the network's biggest star, Bill O'Reilly. After that, other female Fox employees alleged similar mistreatment by Ailes, including Meghan Kelly, another high-profile anchor.

Ailes strongly denied the claims, but stepped down with a $40 million severance package. "After all he built in his career, he for all practical purposes died alone".

"I only understand friendship or scorched earth", Ailes once said.

Ailes made his early reputation as a strategist and media adviser to Republican political candidates, beginning with Richard M. Nixon and including Presidents Reagan and George H.W. Bush.

Fox News promoted Republican candidates and causes and relentlessly attacked what it perceived to be liberal bias in the mainstream media and the entertainment industry.
