Tech Report: Google shows off new products at annual developer’s conference

19 Mai 2017

In the conference, Google revealed its plans for the Android O Beta and unveiled the second developer preview for it.

The Assistant is now available on more than 100 million devices, including Android smartphones, Android Auto, Android TV, and Android Home.

Before the announcement at Google I/O, we know the features like picture-in-picture, notification channels and improved keyboard navigation for the next version of Android which is Android 8.0.

Android O, expected to launch later this year, will bring more fluid experiences and improve "vitals" such as battery life and security, Google said.

Google has only announced a handful of new Android O features so far.

It also is launching an attempt to make its voice-controlled digital assistant more proactive and visual while expanding its audience to Apple's iPhone, where it will try to outwit older peer, Siri. The company is also introducing an Android Assistant App Directory so you can easily find apps compatible with the Google Assistant.

"We are now witnessing a new shift in computing: the move from a mobile-first to an AI-first world", Google chief executive Sundar Pichai said during an opening presentation.

At its core, Google I/O is where those who develop apps and products learn about the latest versions of the basic software tools and suites.

Optimized apps will be promoted on the Google Play Store with the new section "Optimized for your device". Google also designed the service to minimise data usage on bandwidth-hungry services like YouTube.

Google Assistant can now work alongside Siri on your iPhone. Here comes the privacy concern, however, Google has made sure that you can share the library depending on your choice, meaning you can share it entirely or only from a certain date or share only selected pictures that contain certain things, like your dog.

One of the major topics, Google touched upon during its keynote was the Google Assistant, saying it's taking steps to make the AI-driven helper more conversational. As well as optimization, the new software will focus on rebuilding Google's core apps - such as Gmail and Google Chrome - to ensure they use less storage space, processing power and mobile data.
