And I'm very excited to be putting that out. It's hard to think of a series that altered the TV detective drama more profoundly, opening up worlds of possibility that later took shape on too many shows to name here - "The X-Files", "Desperate Housewives", "The Killing", "Fargo", "Hannibal", "True Detective", "Mr. Robot", and "Top of the Lake" are only a few. This fact might embarrass the more cinephilic people in the Twin Peaks audience: Riverdale is many things, but one thing it is not is an auteur show, and it definitely is not cinematic. While they do not reveal anything about the new series, they show people and places that are familiar to long-time fans.
"How's Annie?" was a question asked by Dale Cooper (Kyle McLachlan), the Federal Bureau of Investigation agent who was sent to the small Northwestern logging town of Twin Peaks to help solve the mystery of local prom queen Laura Palmer's brutal murder. Beneath the quaint Fifties-isms of Twin Peaks lie some of the most grisly acts ever seen on network television.
Rest assured: This revival isn't a remake. Like Cooper, we thought that we were too gifted, too good, to be defeated.
"Loose ends" is understating it, of course. (Remember Twin Peaks parties?) For all its weirdness, the series resonated in part because of our fascination with that earlier "fantastic decade".
'To be honest, it didn't come straight away, ' said MacLachlan of the role of Agent Cooper who was last seen on screen 26 years ago in 1991. "How's Annie?", in reference to his girlfriend Annie, played by Heather Graham.
"I'll see you in 25 years". But it wasn't enough to stop ABC from canceling the show.
Speaking as a fan of David Lynch - The Elephant Man and Eraserhead being two of the most engaging films ever made - I think I can not have been entirely alone in finding Twin Peaks a bit tricky to follow. Most of the principal cast is back, as are Lynch and Frost.
The new season of Twin Peaks begins screening on Sky's SoHo channel on May 22. David Lynch had already made Blue Velvet, and was one of the first high-profile filmmakers to willingly work in television. Lynch, who was still attached to the series at that time, directed Season 2's first two episodes and the finale. To say we absolutely love it would be an understatement - check it out, and let us know what you think! Nobody knows, despite the release of 10 (10!) separate teaser trailers.
Interestingly, one hit show has been a bit under the radar with its Twin Peaks references is Stranger Things.
Watch the cast discuss the show's odd universe and the upcoming revival in the new People/Entertainment Weekly Network (PEN) special EW Reunites: Twin Peaks here, or download the app on your favorite mobile and streaming devices. Where's he been all this time? We can't wait. Or we think the revival is a bad idea.
To put it another way: America needs David Lynch. As you do. He makes his first appearance in the pilot episode. Even the mysterious man in the red room in Cooper's dreams asks Cooper if he'd like a cup of joe. Bless his heart, Miguel Ferrer", the veteran actor who was starring in "NCIS: "Los Angeles" when he died in January. Fire Walk With Me is a pretty obscure 1992 film, but it is available through Showtime and with a Showtime package through Amazon Prime. Showtime has released only cryptic trailers and still shots, and a cast list issued several months ago is so long as to amount to nearly everyone who was on the show and many who just watched the show. They are joined by such newcomers as Jim Belushi, Michael Cera, Richard Chamberlain, Laura Dern, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Tim Roth, Amanda Seyfried, Eddie Vedder and Naomi Watts. "And who could figure that in Spain and Italy and England and Japan and many, many other countries something like this that seems sort of homespun could be understood and appreciated so much and intensely", Lynch said in 1992, after the show had gone off the air.
Plenty, but you'll have to tune in to find out.
This chilling conclusion to the event, "Showtime Presents: A Tribute to Twin Peaks", was the culmination of an immersive exploration into the Twin Peaks world, complete with cherry pie, damn fine coffee and burlesque performances from Twin Peaks' favorite characters.
