Jose Bautista drew a four-pitch walk to load the bases for Smoak, who hit a flare to shallow right field that pushed two runs across and gave Toronto a 3-2 lead. All of his home runs have come with men on base.
The Blue Jays assured themselves of at least a split in their four-game series with the Mariners with a 4-0 win on Friday night.
But the true hero of that game is Ryan Goins, dare I say it - the hottest hitter on the Blue Jays right now? "I didn't want it to rip completely".
The Jays recognize there is an opportunity to continue grinding forward in this nine-game homestand. "His jersey is not even recognizable anymore". Pillar walked and Darwin Barney struck out swinging.
"He did a great job", Gibbons said.
Predictably, the Jays inability to generate offence without so many of its prominent bats was exposed in another frustrating outing, as they managed just three hits off Indians starter Carlos Carrasco, who was spectacular.
Pillar came in leading the AL with 47 hits, one ahead of New York's Starlin Castro.
"It's been a wild year so far", Mariners manager Scott Servais said with a rueful smile. Unbeaten Dallas Keuchel (6-0) became the first six-game victor in the majors, helped by a home run from Carlos Correa.
The Mariners' attack had a lot of problems in Toronto, but Segura was 7-for-17 in the four games.
The Mariners did manage to actually score runs, which is a bonus after mustering all of two runs in the first two games in Canada, including a span of 21 straight innings without scoring. But yanking one out of the park is cooler, he said.
The Blue Jays manufactured a run in the second inning against Christian Bergman after Steve Pearce and Ryan Goins reached on singles.
Dyson replied in the next inning with a solo shot off Leone to right field, his first of the season, to tie it 2-2 and set up Pillar's heroics two innings later.
"He's a little more aggressive early in the count, and he's laying off that breaking ball", manager John Gibbons said.
The Blue Jays still have a chance! The Mariners responded in the seventh when Jarrod Dyson hit a leadoff blast against Dominic Leone.
Notes: Right-hander Aaron Sanchez (0-1) will be activated off Toronto's disabled list in time to start Sunday's series finale against Seattle. Sanchez returned from a blister issue against Tampa Bay on April 30 but lasted only one inning. Sanchez wasn't thrilled to be asked about the bleeding.
Through his first 33 games, the right-fielder was striking out at his highest pace since he was a rookie almost a decade and a half ago and walking at his lowest rate since an injury-shortened 2013. RHP Dan Altavilla was recalled from Triple-A Tacoma.
Kevin Pillar fled from his teammates after he had touched home plate on his game-ending home run Sunday afternoon that gave the Toronto Blue Jays a 3-2 victory over the Seattle Mariners and their fifth straight win. To make matters only so much worse, backstop Russell Martin was next to find himself amongst those who are banged up as he attempts to come back from nerve damage in his left shoulder.
Blue Jays designated hitter Kendrys Morales was pulled in the seventh inning because of tightness in his left hamstring. Hector Santiago (4-1, 2.76) is in line to start Sunday.
Stroman was able to get out of some jams, including the first inning when he struck out Kyle Seager and Valencia to end the inning with two runners on base.
Liriano struggled to start the season with the Pirates past year, and was eventually traded to the Toronto Blue Jays. He now has three home runs over his last four games - he had two in his first 33 - as his strikeouts have become less frequent, replaced by the disciplined, risky plate appearances that have been a hallmark of his post-age-28 career. RHP Bartolo Colon (1-4, 7.22) starts for the Braves.
