United States to exit Paris climate pact but open to new deal

02 Juin 2017

Withdrawing from the agreement would help the US avoid future legal liabilities, he added.

The Associated Press published Trump talking points on the decision that says the accord "was negotiated poorly by the Obama Administration and signed out of desperation".

"That's not how it works".

In a Berlin speech, Chinese Premier Li Keqiang said that fighting climate change is a "global consensus" and an "international responsibility". It noted that Microsoft had for weeks, and along with other big companies, lobbied President Trump on the matter, urging him to keep the U.S.in the agreement.

"Donald Trump has made a historic mistake which our grandchildren will look back on with stunned dismay". While Trump faced heavy worldwide pressure to remain within the agreement, from the Pope during his trip to the Vatican, China's President Xi and European leaders during the G7 summit, the GOP overwhelmingly opposed Paris from the get-go. That's according to a White House official, congressional officials and others briefed by the White House. However their efforts did not win over Trump. While traveling overseas last week, Trump was repeatedly pressed to stay in the deal by European leaders and the pope.

Microsoft's Brad Smith: "We're disappointed with the decision to exit the Paris Agreement". It continues that "The U.S.is already leading the world in energy production and doesn't need a bad deal that will harm American workers".

Though the Paris Climate Agreement is not legally binding, the decision to either stay or withdraw has been deeply polarizing not only with lawmakers but also members of Trump's inner circle. The withdrawal date is four years from when the agreement took effect.

The move did not necessarily come as a surprise- reports on Wednesday indicated Trump meant to leave the agreement.

Before Trump even finished his full address, President Obama issued a statement opposing the withdrawal. It is a report on climate mitigation that ignores climate change. Musk has attended three meetings at the White House about U.S. manufacturing and infrastructure spending.

Meanwhile, a number of economic analyses question whether leaving the agreement will create jobs. That process would take only a year, meaning Trump could get out of the deal by the middle of 2018.

Scientists have warned failure to curb unsafe climate change will lead to sea level rises, more intense storms and flooding, more extreme droughts, water shortages and heatwaves as well as massive loss of wildlife and reduction in crop yields, potentially sparking conflict and mass migration.

That is likely why the administration is trying to avoid leaving the UNFCC.

Trump would have several options, including triggering a years-long withdrawal process or taking the more drastic step of removing the U.S. from the United Nations climate treaty.

Briefing reporters, White House officials would not specify what parameters would be acceptable to Trump in a new accord. It is happening because of the rise in greenhouse gas emissions from human activity. "We will buy and create more demand for electric cars and trucks", a group of more than 50 mayors from cities ranging from Houston, Texas to New Orleans, Louisiana said in a statement on Thursday.

Trump's executive order also reversed regulations that required all federal agencies to incorporate climate change into their planning and review processes, overturned a moratorium on coal development on federal lands, and ordered a review of emissions restrictions for oil and gas wells. Climate action is unstoppable. The message is simple: The sustainability train has left the station.
