The Louisiana representative was one of five people shot during a congressional baseball practice Wednesday morning. But Slater said authorities were still working to determine a motive and had no indication Hodgkinson knew about the baseball practice ahead of time. He was expected to recover.

When Texas Democrat Al Green called for President Donald Trump to be impeached on the House floor in late May, his office received several voice mails threatening to lynch him, according to the Houston Chronicle.

"We had nothing but baseball bats to fight back against a rifle with", Brooks said.

As the majority whip in the House, the 51-year-old Scalise is responsible for rounding up votes and maintaining order among the Republican Party's fractious ranks.

Republican lawmakers were practicing at a baseball field in the Washington suburb of Alexandria, Virginia ahead of Thursday night's annual charity game against their Democratic counterparts when Hodgkinson fired a volley of shots. Jeff Flake, R-Arizona, described the gunman to reporters as a middle-aged white male wearing a blue shirt and possibly jeans. "I told him they were Republicans. He said, 'Okay, thanks, ' and turned around", Duncan said. "They can't run. If they get up they are a target".

"He looked like a normal resident", Duncan said.

The bravery and quick response of U.S. Capitol Police prevented Wednesday's shooting at a Northern Virginia baseball field from becoming a "massacre", congressmen at the center of the terrifying ordeal said. Gov. John Bel Edwards said the shooting appeared to be an "outrageous, cowardly attack on one of our own".

In a brief interview in a Senate hallway, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said, "I think everybody handled it well and things seem to be under control". "Nothing was out of the ordinary about this gentleman coming up and asking me a question".

An apparent eyewitness said on Twitter that gunfire rang out at the YMCA baseball fields, by the Eugene Simpson Stadium Park. He was in his Washington D.C. office when he saw the news flash across his TV screen. Pearce said he thought he was just another spectator.

A local resident who posted a video of the scene after the shooting said, "There were probably about 80 to 100 shots fired over there". He told CNN that he tried to help Scalise, saying, "We used my belt to help put a tourniquet around his leg".

"We took off down the street and a Good Samaritan let us into his apartment so we could call 911 and then also call my family", he said.

One of the Capitol Police officers who was shot was a woman.

Two of the victims are U.S. Capitol Police officers who have not yet been identified.

"They shoot him. He goes down".

"In June previous year, the Republican appeared to quote Fox News contributor Judge Napolitano on Twitter, which said: "[We] have a Second Amendment ... to shoot at the government when it becomes tyrannical!"

Also shot were a congressional staffer and members of the Capitol police force.

"Had they not been there, it could have been a lot worse, I mean, dramatically worse", Conaway said. Scalise ran for majority whip against Peter Roskam of IL and Marlin Stutzman of IN, after the former whip, McCarthy, was elected majority leader. He reportedly underwent surgery earlier this morning.
