India crush Canada 3-0

Akashdeep, Harmanpreet and Talwinder Singh each scored two goals.

It's one of the world's most intense sports rivalries, dating back nearly to India's independence half a century ago. "We will not be found wanting when we go into game against India", said Khawaja Junaid, former global and coach of the Pakistan team, who concedes that the big loss to Canada was tragic.

Sports Minister Vijay Goel on Monday congratulated the Indian hockey team for the emphatic victory against Pakistan in the ongoing World Hockey League Semi-Final in London.

Iain Smythe scored twice before Floris van Son made the score 4-0 with a backhand strike. Trailing by four goals, Pakistan showed some resilience and tested Indian goalkeeper Akash Chikte but the Indian didn't allow their citadel to be breached and instead pounded two more goals through Akashdeep and Mor to complete the successful outing. "They can come up with a good game and hence it is important for us to stick to the roles assigned by our coach and execute them as planned", he said. India's previous best performance against Pakistan were two identical 7-4 wins, in the Champions Trophy of 2003 and the Commonwealth Games in 2010. Sardar was previous year accused by British-Indian hockey player Ashpal Bhogal, insisting to be his ex-fiancé, of rape and assault both in India and UK. Team India's first goal was scored by drag flicker Harmanpreet in the 13th minute on a penalty corner.

It was his trademark attempt shooting the ball to the top right corner of the post giving no chance for Pakistan goalkeeper Amjad Ali to stop it.

This is not the first time that the Indian Hockey team has paid homage to the martyred soldiers of the Indian army. However, Tasawwar Abbas' wonderful ball found Bhutta unmarked in the middle of the circle who sounded the board for Pakistan's first goal of the tournament.

In the process, India registered their biggest ever margin of victory in hockey against their arch rivals and it was also sweet revenge for the humiliating defeat India had suffered at the 1982 Asiad.

As a child, I too have enjoyed Indo-Pak matches, particularly those played in Sharjah, home to both Indians and Pakistanis expatriates. But in the 59th minute, Akashdeep netted his second goal and gave India a 7-1 win.
