Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray in the past had said he had suggested Bhagwat's name for the post of president. One was of (RSS chief) Mohan Bhagwat. Shah, who is in Mumbai on a three-day tour, had met Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray in the morning.
Uddhav said that while the BJP was considering mid-term polls in Maharashtra, he was more anxious about rising agrarian distress and farmers' suicides. The agenda is Presidential elections - a replacement for President Pranab Mukherjee has to be found before mid-July.
A Shiv Sena leader who requested anonymity, however, conceded that the party had no option but "to support Kovind".
The BJP chief said Modi had restored dignity to the Prime Minister's Office.
The opposition has complained that the BJP has come without any names and the Congress said the government was seeking cooperation, not consensus. The meeting which was held at Matoshree was also attended by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and BJP state unit president Raosaheb Danve and Yuva Sena president Aditya Thackeray. He has called a meeting of Sena leaders on Tuesday to discuss it.
The Shiv Sena, the second largest constituent of the NDA, has had an uneasy relationship with the BJP ever since the two parties parted ways ahead of the 2014 assembly polls. BJP sources said the two leaders agreed to put the recent bitterness behind them and work together. Sena spokesperson Manisha Kayande said that Nitesh was a child in politics and he is just utilizing his father's name for getting publicity. The value of each Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha MP's vote is 708 and value of vote of MLAs is decided by population of that state.
Against the backdrop of a speculation that mid-term polls could be in offing in Maharashtra, he said Sena is not unduly anxious about the snap polls, but is more concerned about suicides being committed by farmers.
"We will consult all our allies and then reach a decision on the presidential poll nominee", he said.
"These (BJP/Parivar) people should focus their attention there and think of how you will win the war in J&K, and ensure that the sacrifices of our soldiers don't go in vain". He said the Sena stood firmly behind the farmers' demands for a loan waiver and it would not allow the BJP government to get away until a complete loan waiver was announced.
He said he was not afraid of the threat of mid-term elections.
