Republicans and Democrats have swapped political insults for friendly rivalry at their annual congressional baseball game in honour of House of Representatives politician Steve Scalise, critically injured in a shooting rampage.
However, according to Dr. Jack Sava, Rep. Scalise's condition has improved slightly. Republicans and Democrats play one another in annual event, which raises funds for charity.
The doctors said that while Scalise remains in critical condition, they "are encouraged by improvement in his condition".
Before they took the field, Democrats and Republicans gathered in prayer around second base as fans chanted "USA, USA".
"It's security for other people who are there, too", she said.
"This game is always an important moment for both parties to come together... but as you all know tonight's game has taken on a much deeper level of meaning beyond anything we would have thought", Trump said in his recorded message.
The single round traveled across Scalise's pelvis, "fracturing bones, injuring internal organs, and causing severe bleeding" stated the hospital Wednesday night.
Police special agent David Bailey, injured in the shooting Wednesday in an Alexandria, Va., park, threw out the ceremonial first ball after it was presented to him by Joe Torre, former manager of the New York Yankees.
The Capitol Police were at the ballfield in Virginia because Rep. Steve Scalise, R-La., is the majority whip and member of the leadership.
The 66-year-old suspect from Belleville, Illinois, was a volunteer for Senator Bernie Sanders' presidential campaign but whether he was politically motivated is still unclear, investigators said.
At Friday's hospital news conference, Scalise's chief of staff Brett Horton read a statement from Jennifer Scalise, the congressman's wife.
Once a relatively cozy affair, played at a minor league ballpark in Maryland, the game has gone big time in recent years and has been played at Nationals Park, just a few blocks from the Capitol. At a press conference, President Trump says that wounded Scalise's condition is more hard than people first realized.
It emerged Hodgkinson had a social media page filled with criticism of Republicans and the Trump administration. The FBI continues to process evidence in an effort to assess the potential motivations of the shooter, the agency said in a statement Friday.
Scalise - seen here after being shot in the hip - underwent another surgery Saturday.
Three others were hit in attack before Capitol Police officers returned fire, taking down James T. Hodgkinson.
Before the shooting, Rep. Cedric Richmond, D-La., said he had asked Ryan about increasing budgets for members' offices so they can pay for more security.
