Imam stops angry Muslims assailing London van suspect

The Muslim cleric who prevented the angry worshippers from harming the suspect of the van attack at a mosque in London's Finsbury Park, has been praised for his "bravery and courage". Three Muslim extremists who carried out the attack were killed by police.

A 47-year-old man was held on suspicion of the commission, preparation or instigation of terrorism including murder and attempted murder.

The chaos outside the Finsbury Park Mosque follows three Islamist-inspired attacks over the past three months that have triggered a surge in hate crimes around Britain. Pictures of the van indicated it was rented from Pontyclun Van Hire, northwest of Cardiff.

The U.K. police service said officers were called at 12:20 a.m. local time (7:20 p.m. Sunday ET) to the scene on Seven Sisters Road in the Finsbury Park neighborhood, home to many immigrants.
