Murray Downs Nishikori to set up Wawrinka Showdown

20 Juin 2017

Andy Murray believes a change of tactics in the second set against Kei Nishikori was the key to him making a fourth successive Roland Garros semi-final.

Andy Murray racked up his 650th career win to reach the French Open quarterfinals Monday before paying an unscripted, emotional tribute to the victims of the London and Manchester terror attacks.

Murray was barely tested in the fourth round, beating 21-year-old Karen Khachanov 6-3, 6-4, 6-4.

"So I hope I can improve that. It should be an interesting match".

"I just try to find myself into this zone where I don't do much unforced errors", the Ukrainian said, "and still play aggressive". I think we were both very tense. At the age of 37, Bopanna has finally got a real reward in his bag after being a regular on the circuit for more than 10 years. I know it will be tough but I'll fight as hard as I can. But this is a different year. "I have one day rest tomorrow (Tuesday)". "Sometimes, you just have to do what you have to do to win the match".

"He played very well (against Khachanov) and he's playing better and better".

Murray, who lost back-to-back matches to Borna Coric and Fabio Fognini in Madrid and Rome, said: "They are all obviously playing extremely well".

"In the US Open final previous year he definitely deserved to win [against Novak Djokovic]".

The other men's semi-final clash will pit Spanish nine-time champion and No. 4 seed Rafael Nadal against Austrian No. 6 seed Dominic Thiem, who upset second-seeded Serbian Novak Djokovic, the defending champion, in straight sets.

The third seed Halep trailed by a set and 5-1 against the fifth seed but somehow dug herself out of a hole before storming to victory.

"For sure, no one expected Djokovic [to lose] 6-love in the third set", he added.

When asked if he is considering taking time out of the game, he said: "Trust me, I'm thinking about many things". He [Djokovic] had some [chances] to take it, to be a little bit more confident, little by little. In another quarterfinal, Pliskova meets No. 28 Caroline Garcia, a 6-2, 6-4 victor against Alize Cornet in a match between two Frenchwomen.

But Wawrinka backed Djokovic to bounce back from the upset heading into Wimbledon. Hopefully soon, because he's a great champion.

"How the players are supposed to know that in their head when we're playing at one speed throughout the whole year, and then you show up at the slams, you're expected to speed up by 5 seconds".
