Scalise has previously played in the congressional game, and in previous years wore a variety of Louisiana jerseys.

Doctors say Rep. Steve Scalise (skuh-LEES') remains in critical condition at a Washington hospital but is improving.

The first update from the hospital came late Wednesday, indicating Scalise had undergone an initial surgery and a second procedure, in addition to receiving "multiple units of blood transfusion".

The family of House Majority Whip Steve Scalise said Sunday this Father's Day has a special meaning one day after Scalise underwent a third surgery after being shot last Wednesday by a man who was reportedly distraught over President Donald Trump's election.

First pitch is at 7:05 p.m. ET for the 80th annual Congressional Baseball Game at Nationals Park, played with unusual emotion a day after the wounding of Rep. Steve Scalise, a Louisiana Republican, and three others during a Republican team practice.

He has had several operations since the shooting. But Slater said authorities were still working to determine a motive and had "no indication" Hodgkinson knew about the ball practice ahead of time. Remember this: "If you have a town hall and the person wants to do you harm, there are also hundreds or thousands of constituents that are there that could be harmed also", Richmond said. "When he arrived, he was in critical condition with an imminent risk of death".

"When tragedy strikes we are family", said Rep.

Although Scalise was able to talk on the ballfield, by the time he was transported by helicopter to the hospital, he was in shock.

Tickets for the Congressional Baseball Game sell for $10 to $15, which when added to online donations has resulted in more than $1 million for the game's four designated charities, including the Capitol Police Memorial Fund. Members added the organization to its list after two Capitol Police officers, David Bailey and Crystal Griner, were wounded while trying to protect the members during Wednesday's practice.

From the stands, Vince Wetzel, a resident of Sacramento, California, who is visiting Washington and chose to take in the game, said, "It's just a good call to put aside political differences and just play some baseball".

"We are encouraged in the improvement in his condition in the last 36 hours", Sava said.

Predicting when the congressman would be released from the hospital was hard, the doctor said, adding that "he will require a period of healing and of rehabilitation".

"As far as winning and losing, I think that's far from anybody's mind right now", he said.

MacArthur said local law enforcement has helped with protection at public events in his district.

Several other people were also injured in Wednesday's shooting before Scalise's security detail and other police officers gunned down the assailant, who later died.

Bailey was spotted Friday in the Capitol, on crutches and out of uniform, accepting congratulations from fellow officers. Michigan Rep. Fred Upton tweeted Thursday that friends of the wounded lobbyist Matt Mika will be giving out small white ribbons in support of Mika and all those affected by the attack.
