Gunman acted alone in shooting of congressman

23 Juin 2017

House Majority Whip Steve Scalise has been upgraded to "fair condition", MedStar Washington Hospital Center said Wednesday, a week after the shooting at the congressional baseball practice that left him wounded.

This new evidence combined with Hodgkinson's social media rhetoric against Republicans and conservatives will all be taken into account as the investigation progresses forward.

GJELTEN: Agent Slater said it appears Hodgkinson's decision to shoot up a Republican baseball practice was more spontaneous than planned. They say they don't think the shooting was an act of terrorism. Hodgkinson maintained a social media presence that was pro-Bernie Sanders and anti-Republican.

Rep. Ron DeSantis, R-Fla., however has raised the prospect that the incident may have been politically motivated, saying shortly after the attack that a man who matched Hodgkinson's description approached him and others in the parking lot of the baseball field to ask whether the practice involved Republicans or Democrats.

The FBI said that on June 12, a family member asked Hodgkinson in a text message to return home to IL. Hodgkinson bought the guns in April, after Trump was elected, Slater said.

"He would say "yeah I agree" or something like that", said former Alexandria Mayor Bill Euille, who got to know Hodgkinson over the course of about six to eight weeks. Neighbors called police as Hodgkinson conducted target practice on his property, but he did not violate any laws, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said.

"Through a review of activity logs at the storage facility", he added, "we determined that the shooter visited his unit more than 43 times between April and June".

Hodgkinson, suspect in shooting at Congressional baseball practice. Officials said they also searched the van he had been living out of in the parking lot of the YMCA and found indications that he meant to go home on his computer.

The FBI found a Google search of truck stops, maps and toll-free routes to the Northern Virginia area on his computers.

During a search of Hodgkinson's van, investigators found a a handwritten list of six House Republicans' names.

The others injured in the shooting were two Capitol Police officers, Special Agents David Bailey and Crystal Griner; Matt Mika, a lobbyist for Tyson Foods; and Zach Barth, a legislative correspondent for Rep. Roger Williams, R-Texas.

The officers, who were assigned to Scalise's security detail, and exchanged gunfire with Hodgkinson were credited with helping prevent more people from being injured that day. Hodgkinson's widow released a statement that she had "no idea" he was planning to carry out the attack and that he said he was headed to Washington "work on taxes".

We wish Congressman Scalise and the other victims of this attack a full and rapid recovery, and urge that this latest tragic attack usher in an era of soul-searching and introspection.
