The Dundonald Links course is a 7,242-yard, par-72 layout that was designed by the highly acclaimed Kyle Phillips, whose creations also include Kingsbarns, one of the three venues for the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. The Englishman had missed nine cuts in a row up until the French Open but now says he's found the missing piece of the jigsaw.

"I've been playing some steady golf for the past five or six years but probably haven't chipped or putted as well as I could have, and so haven't possibly put four rounds together", he added.

Wide Open When is The Open 2017, what TV channel is it on and how do I get tickets?

The Open returns to Birkdale next week and Harrington is relaxed about the prospect of getting his hands on the Claret Jug for the third time. As a result, the 2014 Open champion at Hoylake will arrive next week at at Royal Birkdale seriously short of competitive practice and, more importantly, a long way short of his best form.

"Certainly the Scottish Open for me is the biggest event I look forward to every year", Drysdale said.

But not this year with the 2013 Masters champ having visited Royal Birkdale last week before venturing to the Scottish west coast for the $US7m event being staged for the first time on Dundonald Links, a sister course to Loch Lomond.

The four-time major victor had not missed successive cuts since May 2015 and was inside the projected cut after covering the front nine in 33, but needed two attempts to escape a greenside bunker on the 13th to double-bogey the par four for the second day running.

Harrington has seen too much in his career, however, to think that.

It's been almost 10 months since McIlroy last won at the 2016 Tour Championship, and he's certainly not at his best entering next week's British Open at Royal Birkdale.

Kuchar, the 39-year-old from Florida, is joint second with California's 2015 champion Fowler. And I've been playing catch-up all year.

Adam Scott is a shot further back after a 69, with world number nine Alex Noren five off the pace. Daniel Berger, Kyle Stanley and Kevin Kisner are all winners on the PGA Tour already this term, whilst the pair of Brian Harman and Charley Hoffman have suffered several near-misses despite being the model of consistency. I'm shooting in and around par. Fowler has contended at both previous majors and has seven top-10 finishes this season. Two years ago, however, he had two weeks to regroup.
