2 dead after gas explosion collapses school in Minneapolis

Former bus driver John Carlson, 81, didn't just make a second career of his custodial work at Minnehaha Academy.

He began his caretaker job at the school in 2003 and was known for his generosity in handing out ice cream bars to staff and students.

They suffered fractures, cuts and bruises, not burns, and that "It could have been a lot worse", he said.

Initially, the department said that one person died in a collapse but later they tweeted that death was unconfirmed.

Police say five people were taken to a hospital with injuries, including one who has since been released.

Minnehaha Academy confirmed the fatality and identified the victim as receptionist Ruth Berg, who worked with the academy for 17 years.

The damage occurred in a central, older part of the school building complex, where ninth- through 12th-graders attend.

"He knew everything about the school", Kostman said.

"When we got outside and saw everything, we were all so relieved and happy that we made it out", Rhoades said. The fire was put out by early Wednesday afternoon. "We have not heard from him", said his daughter, Lynnda Nelson, in the online post. "Please also keep in your prayers a staff member who is unaccounted for, those who were injured and are now receiving medical care, and family members".
