A lot of that had to do with technology, of course. Located in the fey region of End-World, amid a sea of singing red roses, the Dark Tower is the nexus point of the time-space continuum. Does this mean that The Dark Tower is building up to a shared universe with the rest of Stephen King's work?
Thanks to heavy doses of CGI, this is no longer the case. The first book, The Gunslinger, was published in 1982, the last, The Dark Tower, in 2004. While the jury is still out on whether fans deem it a worthy adaptation, reviews have been less than favorable. The Dark Tower film is actually a sequel to the entire series.
So when did the saga of the making of The Dark Tower begin? Sony sure hopes so.
Naturally, we chose to go straight to the source for the answers.
"Nikolaj Arcel's efforts to translate and condense Stephen King's long-running series of densely mythologized novels amount to being a western without the majesty of the west, a fantasy without anything even coming close to being fantastic", the review further added. "He's graced my life with opportunities which I know are not of my hand or any other human kind". Now, it's been stripped to the bone to a lean 88-minute runtime. Glieberman, who noted that he hasn't read the books on which the film is based, wrote that the film was brief and stylish enough to be enjoyable, despite the fact that it offered no emotional resonance. Reshoots and new edits were administered and fans had to wait forever to see the lackluster trailer.
The plot is complicated, but the famous first line of the series holds the key: "The man in black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed". There's another fun scene where Roland finds himself being questioned by a doctor inside a NYC hospital, but they double down on that fish-outta-water angle in a later scene that's just skin-crawlingly corny (it involves Roland eating a hot dog). Yes, Roland is a little worse for wear after this particular fight.
There is only one answer, which is that King thought these ideas were cool. In the book series, Roland has two other companions apart from Jake.
Variety's Owen Gleiberman is more favourable, saying The Dark Tower is "a competent and watchable paranoid metaphysical video game that doesn't overstay its welcome". "I think it's the right thing to do".
"Explaining how he tackled the big diet change, he told US breakfast show Good Morning America, "(I) started off with a 10-day fast to kick-start losing all the fat that I had on myself on Gold. In 2010 the rights to Dark Tower expired. "And you gotta go see the movie to see if he does that".
The Dark Tower opens in theaters on August 4th.
