The singer-songwriter performed a surprise cover of the late legend's Gentle on My Mind for fans at the Bridgestone Arena, including young country star Kelsea Ballerini.
The song "Galveston" was written by Jimmy Webb and released by Campbell in 1969.
"When we opened for Glen in Branson, MO on his farewell tour, I told him that he was one of the few artists that I could pinpoint times in my life when I first heard his songs". It was the pairing of a lifetime. A college friend, I realized, also liked those songs.
Campbell couldn't resist the allure of Hollywood.
Glen Campbell died Tuesday at age 81. I have, too, and I continued to follow Mr. Campbell's career with interest primarily because of those two songs. On the verge of being dropped from Capitol Records in 1966 when Campbell fortunes saw an upswing as he teamed up with producer and former "Wrecking Crew" colleague Al De Lory. "I can hug you and hold you but I can't know for sure where you are".
That dichotomy was also explored in his everlasting hit, "Rhinestone Cowboy", which Campbell later said he felt was something of a personal anthem.
"This is a disease that our country needs to invest money in and take care of or it will bankrupt us", Aaberg said.
Interpretation was one of Campbell's key gifts.
"Maybe Glen and Merle (Haggard) are picking a tune together right now". Given the recent news, the show should be even more special. As always, Campbell and his cohorts managed to create unforgettable music without ever overshadowing the sound of the artists they were backing. Given that an upcoming run of dates in Australia and New Zealand was just canceled out of concerns that Campbell wasn't up for that much traveling, you had to wonder about his condition.
Kim Campbell, Glen's wife of more than 35 years, is a founding member of WomenAgainstAlzheimer's, part of the UsAgainstAlzheimer's Network. With their lysergic strings and echoing guitars, their soft textures and clean melodies, his recordings suggest another place-not just a time passed but a sonic ideal that exists only in the corners of our mind.
In 2005, Campbell, who was also proficient on Scottish bagpipes, was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame, an honour he said was "one of the biggest highlights of my life".
