Rick Pitino and Tom Jurich fired by Louisville

02 Octobre 2017

Like him or hate him, Pitino brings in dollars for the university in several ways, a giant shoe contract for the athletic department, ticket sales, TV revenue and more all hover around Rick Pitino as the head coach at Louisville.

Already on probation for a scandal involving strippers and escorts entertaining recruits and other players in dorm rooms - Pitino also said past year he was unaware of those actions - the Louisville basketball program could face severe penalties depending on the outcome of the current investigation.

That recruit has been reported to be June 3 signee Brian Bowen, who was on campus Wednesday.

Very little of what was revealed in an FBI investigation into the underbelly of recruiting in college basketball was surprising.

"In one instance, an Adidas employee arranged for $100,000 and ongoing monthly payments allegedly funneled through a third-party company for a high school player, who is now a freshman athlete at the school".

University of Arizona's Emmanuel Richardson, Auburn University's Chuck Person, Lamont Evans of Oklahoma State and Tony Bland of University of Southern California were the NCAA coaches charged after a two-year FBI investigation.

There seemed to be little doubt by the end of Wednesday that both Jurich and Pitino are gone, but it will take some dotting of I's and crossing of T's to get both the firings finalized. Postel is also said to have been meeting with lawyers for the school and said they would have further comment later today.

Pitino's future meanwhile will be evaluated at a later date, Postel said, while his assistants' status will be examined by the interim AD. Jurich's future will be determined by the school's Board of Trustees. He sat out Louisville's first Final Four run under Pitino in 2005 and its first appearance in the national semifinals since the 1986 national title run due to NCAA rules for transfers.

Pitino denied knowledge of the activities described in Powell's book and criticized McGee for his actions.

"I wouldn't put the blame exclusively on Rick Pitino, but it's gonna fall back on him cause he is the head coach", says WKU senior, Chauncey Calhoun JR.

Pitino has a 416-143 record over 16 years at Louisville, including a 2013 NCAA championship.

Pitino ranks No. 12 all-time in Division I basketball coaching victories with 770.

Pitino, 65, released a statement after news of the charges was announced Tuesday, saying: "These allegations come as a complete shock to me".

The Louisville basketball program is headed for some dark times.

Prior to that scandal, Pitino admitted in 2009 to having a sexual relationship with Karen Sypher, the wife of a University of Louisville equipment manager.

A federal fraud and bribery scandal shaking college basketball has led to a key question of what will happen to recruits who received money linked to attending certain schools.
