Texas manufacturer of 'bump stocks' halts new sales

So-called "bump stocks" essentially turn a semiautomatic weapon into an automatic one, allowing one to circumvent the federal laws that strictly regulate automatic firearms.

Mental illness is nearly always the real culprit in these mass shootings; normal, mentally stable people don't go off their rocker and set out to kill as many people as they can, and many times it's with whatever deadly weapon they can lay their hands on, be it guns, knives, explosives, or a '93 Chevy Malibu.

The stocks have been around for less than a decade. It started selling them back in 2010 after getting approval from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The killer in Las Vegas apparently used the legal bump stock devices on legal rifles, essentially converting them into automatic weapons, which are banned.

Automatic weapons are capable of a high volume of fire just by holding down the trigger, while semi-automatic weapons load a shell automatically but only fire one bullet each time you pull the trigger.

How hard is it to get an automatic weapon? That allowed him to spray gunfire into the crowd below much more quickly.

It's unclear how many have been sold. But those listings were no longer on either company's website on Wednesday.

Representative Bill Flores, Republican of Texas, called for an outright ban on the conversion device. The device does not perform automatically when installed, and to use it, a shooter must apply constant forward pressure with the non-shooting hand and constant rearward pressure with the shooting hand, the memo said.

"Maybe seeing Senator Feinstein doing her thing - leading the charge against gun violence once again - will remind any wobbling Democrats of how passionate and effective she can be", said Dan Newman, a San Francisco political strategist who hasn't worked with Feinstein. So I think all Republicans and Democrats, regardless of our views on the Second Amendment - and by the way, I believe in upholding the Second Amendment.

LOU BARLETTA: You know, that being said, regardless of what we do, the only people who follow the laws that we create here are law-abiding citizens.

I'm not. We have all heard the old saying, "Guns don't kill people, people kill people", and, of course, that's true; people do kill people and simply use a gun or a knife or even a vehicle to do it. To be an automatic weapon, a rifle must be able to fire continuously by having the shooter press the trigger once.

Republican U.S. Reps. Ken Buck and Mike Coffman would not say whether they backed restrictions on bump stocks - though neither of them said they were immediately opposed. He said he would be surprised if he had sold two of them in the past decade, but now he's unable to find any available, even from wholesalers. "I like to learn how to put them accurately in one spot". Many Republicans say they are open to the proposal.

"She has no idea how guns work", said Sam Paredes, the executive director of Gun Owners of California.

Twelve of the devices were found in Paddock's hotel suite on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, along with 23 weapons, rifle scopes, tripods and high-capacity magazines, federal agents confirmed to multiple media outlets on Wednesday.

UNIDENTIFIED MAN #1: That Slide Fire stock - we're out here to have fun today. Several pounds of ammonium nitrate, a fertilizer that can be turned into explosives, were in his auto, authorities said. The shooting in Las Vegas, in which 58 people were killed, has brought new attention to bump stocks, aftermarket accessories that allow more rapid firing, and prompted Republicans' comments.

DIANNE FEINSTEIN: Our bill is simple and straightforward - ban manufacturing or possession of accessories that accelerate a semiautomatic rifle's rate of fire to that of an automatic weapon.
