That's how impressive they were in a 34-7 drubbing of the Arizona Cardinals, as quarterback Carson Wentz and the Eagles confirmed they now have remedies for most of what prevented them from contending last season. The score was the fourth for the Eagles in five games on their opening drive.
The team's public relations department might as well have issued a press release declaring the Eagles will be contending for a championship in 2017. That won't last forever if they continue to struggle on third down. It's still early, but Wentz's performance has earned him a flawless 158.3 passer rating through one quarter.
Like last week in Los Angeles, the Eagles would lean on the running game in the final quarter. "I was ducking my head and then I saw the ball, so I turned up another gear to go track it. Carson just gave me a great opportunity and threw such a attractive ball".
The Eagles were threatening again late in the second quarter when Wentz - who was phenomenal in the first half - suddenly became erratic. The Eagles would kneel to end the game. They showcased two- and three-tight end formations to aid the run and set up play action. Barner provided another electric return and had one man left to beat before being stopped around the Arizona 30-yard line.
Smith and a few teammates came up with an original, baseball-themed TD celebration.
Carson Wentz missed some throws to be sure, but the ones he made were spectacular Sunday as the Eagles' second year quarterback threw for 304 yards and four touchdowns. Luckily, Blount's 74 yards were enough to keep Arizona from keying in on the Eagles passing game too much. If there was any doubt still left in Wentz's ability to lead the Eagles after a 3-1 start this season, it's gone.
After each of those first three kickoff team stops, the Eagles' defense forced a quick punt.
The Eagles' worst starting position on their four touchdown drives was their own 36.
Why would the Cardinals blitz on 3rd and 19?
BLAME GAME: Cardinals coach Bruce Arians said the flat performance was his fault.
Wentz has now thrown the ball 177 times this season, on pace for significantly fewer throws than past year.
"We have to find out what went so wrong and find ways to improve", Palmer said.
Another facet of Philadelphia's special teams also emerged as a key component of the game: Kenjon Barner's punt returning.
"I know it was extremely hard to play that following Thursday", Ertz said. And players often tell Fipp that they want the chance to chase down returners, even if playing for a touchback is a statistically-sound decision.
"They're over there with (wide receiver) Larry Fitzgerald, they're over there with a veteran", Mills said. Fitzgerald, who had 11 TDs in eight games vs. Philadelphia, was held to six catches for 51 yards. He didn't have a catch for a while until grabbing one for a reception in his 200 straight game. The Cards were 5-2 in those games.
