Nationals' Scherzer confident heading into Game 3

09 Octobre 2017

Manager Joe Maddon said Edwards was the right man for the job. Now, with St. Louis having missed the playoffs for two years in a row, I hope the Cardinals' front office is willing to learning something from the Cubs.

Hendricks started Game 7 of the World Series a year ago as the Cubs beat the Cleveland Indians.

"Lighten the mood a little bit", he said. "Experience, yeah, is a great thing to have. But to have him go this next game is going to be big for us".

Scherzer will make his first start of the 2017 postseason Monday afternoon in Game 3 of the National League Division Series against the Cubs, two games after he probably would have started had his right hamstring not tightened up in the last start of the regular season - and one game after he wanted to start before Nationals trainers and management talked him into two extra days of rest. The Nationals will counter with lefty Gio Gonzalez (15-9, 2.96).

Eight days after he tweaked his hamstring in the second-t0-last game of the regular season, Washington Nationals' ace Max Scherzer finally pitched on Sunday without hesitation.

Washington put two reserve rookie outfielders on the roster, 20-year-old Victor Robles and Brian Goodwin. But we can only go with what he tells us communication-wise. We are here for a reason.

Game 3 is Monday at Chase Field. A Cubs fan deflected a catchable foul ball, a shortstop made an error, a bunch of Marlins got hits - the warmed-over details are well-known here.

Just when the Chicago Cubs had a prime opportunity to snatch a commanding 2-0 series lead against the Washington Nationals, their biggest strength against the Nats (the bullpen) gave the game away. "You'd like to be up 2-0 (but) they hit a couple of homers in the eighth inning", said Maddon, who led the Cubs to the World Series title a year ago. We're human. It's definitely tough because Strasburg was pitching his tail off and they happened to get two hits after that. They had accumulated one run and four hits through the first 16 innings of their NL Division Series against the Chicago Cubs. "Mr. Walk-off is sitting next to me", Harper said of Zimmerman, who has 10 career walk-off homers.

I wouldn't have predicted that the Dusty Baker angle has been a touch underplayed for this series.

Chicago earned a shutout victory in Game 1, but their bullpen collapsed Saturday to even the series. If Kyle Hendricks and Jon Lester can consistently perform at this level throughout the playoffs, the Cubs will be in a strong position to win each and every game.

"It's not my thing, really", he said. "You don't have to add, you know, thoughts or concerns or worries", said Maddon of the breakfast.

The Nationals were shut out in Game 1 of this series on Friday, and Lester fired six stout innings on Saturday, allowing only one run, a solo homer by Rendon.

Less than a half-hour before the game, the Nationals announced that assistant hitting coach Jacque Jones has been suspended with pay pending an internal investigation. Scherzer has been, shall we say, antsy.

Edwards then walked Anthony Rendon and the Cubs brought in Mike Montgomery, who gave up a single to Daniel Murphy with one out.

"That's why we call him Professor", Chicago second baseman Javier Baez said about Hendricks.
