Fire prevention week in Fort St. John kicks off Saturday

10 Octobre 2017

Fire Prevention Week is October 8-14. It aims to include everything from having a plan when a fire happens, knowing the importance of having working smoke alarms and knowing common types of fires during different seasons.

CT public safety officials are urging residents to create and practice a home escape plan in the event of a fire. You and your family are fast asleep when you awaken to the smoke alarm sounding and the smell of smoke.

Have everyone memorize the emergency phone number of the fire department. This marks the fourth year for the kickoff event, and the Fire Prevention Week theme is closing the bedroom door at night to prevent physical injury or property damage in the event of a fire. "Re-entering a burning building is treacherous, and can deliver crippling, if not fatal consequences". "That's why we're making a concerted effort to educate MA residents about the importance of planning and practicing a home escape plan that everyone knows".

A recent survey conducted by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) revealed that only a small percentage of people know the minimum required actions they need to take to provide safety for themselves or family.

Event officials say the fire prevention fest is held annually to remind the community how to stay safe, before it's too late.

· All windows and doors should open easily so they can be used to get outside. They and other area departments regularly give out smoke detectors and will install them.

"Developing and practising a home escape plan is like building muscle memory", said Caskanette. Mitchell says they will also visit both West Elementary and North Star Elementary sharing the fire prevention message with over 900 children.

"We really want everyone to come out and see the fire stations", said Chief Byron Herring. All Americans should create a fire escape plan and practice it yearly with their families. Youth will be able to experience the department's Mobile Prevention Experience Unit, enjoy a puppet show, try on firefighter gear and get an up-close view of fire apparatus. Horry County Fire Rescue will conclude Fire Prevention Week with open houses at all of their stations on Saturday, October 14th.
