Now a big part of that is the Chiefs went from 5-0 to 7-6 and not many people expected that to happen. Overall, there's not much use denying that the Chargers are more put-together than Kansas City. In addition to the game-saving play, Ford had three sacks and seven tackles on a muddy Arrowhead Stadium field.
Chargers safety Jahleel Addae - who was with the Chargers in 2014 when a loss to Kansas City in the season finale cost them a playoff spot - said the game between the AFC West's co-leaders shouldn't be put on a pedestal.
For the Chargers, a win would put them top of the division and give them their eighth win in ten National Football League games.
So who wins this clash of division foes?
The Los Angeles Chargers can take another step in their remarkable turnaround this season. Allen has averaged 137 yards on 10 catches during the last four games, all Chargers wins. The Chiefs' offensive line is one of the NFL's best but they're going up against a defense tied for fifth with 37 sacks. Reid might have righted the ship in last weekend's 26-15 victory over the Raiders - with his team rushing for 165 yards, its highest mark since Week 4. The Chargers can trust Gordon as he hasn't fumbled this at all this season. In Week 7, the Chargers gave safety Adrian Phillips a larger role on defense, often putting him on the field as an extra linebacker.
And then you've got the added element of the Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith being from San Diego. And Alex Smith, with his limited skill set of short passes, is not the wolf who's going to blow down the Chargers' door. "We've got to play our ball".
But they proceeded to lose six of their next seven games before a bounce-back win over Oakland, sliding right back to the pack. They have to bring the same intensity that they brought last week against the Raiders.
The goal during the past five days for the Chargers was to make things as normal as possible.
While the NFC is a mess fueled by talented teams, the AFC is equally messy for different reasons. That's where Justin Houston has to get re-acquainted with Philip Rivers. Now the Chargers are the hot team and the Chiefs are struggling and this game has all of a sudden taken on tremendous meaning.
Any NFL fan will find plenty to like in this prime time match-up between two division rivals with identical records.
Could some fans be coming back to the team? The 2017 season was supposed to see the Raiders rise up and win the AFC West division title, unless the Chiefs would stave off that effort and repeat as Division champions.
The Chiefs intercepted Rivers three times, all in the first half, in the September game.
On the other side, Marcus Peters is questionable to return from suspension while Dee Ford (back) is out. He also found the end zone for the first time since Week 3.
Derek's Prediction: Chiefs 23, Chargers 17. They've held their last three opponents - the Cowboys, Browns, and Redskins - to a combined 29 points. Red on red jerseys and Saturday night with the division on the line makes for the ideal storm for a Chiefs victory.
