CT among states hit hard by deadly flu outbreak

They all died in Benton County. In many cases, hospitalizations and deaths do not show up in official reports, for a variety of reasons - including the fact that most people with flu are never tested for it and that states are not required to report adult flu deaths. According to the Louisiana Department of Health, influenza or "flu" season is here and is wreaking havoc. These early indicators suggest that it may be more severe than usual.

"In the last week, we have noticed a significant increase in influenza outbreaks across B.C.", said Medical Health Officer Dr. Martin Lavoie in a press release.

Statewide, 29 flu deaths had been reported this season as of December 30, with 26 flu-like outbreaks in long-term care facilities, according to the state Department of Health. During that time, 1,574 patients visited emergency rooms with flu symptoms. The Department of Health says the numbers are already double what they were this time a year ago and the state hasn't even reached the peak month for flu season.

The peak season for the flu usually happens in February, Kent said.

Bhide said many people are catching the flu in public, on airplanes, at gyms, and movie theaters. Here, San Diego County saw progress last week with the percentage showing fever, cough and other earmarks of the flu dropping from 13 percent to 11 percent.

We don't need to tell you this if you've already been unlucky enough to come down with the flu this year, but it's bad. "Vaccination is still the best protection to protect ourselves, our families, and our community from the flu".

It is advised that people with higher risk of complications, such as those with heart and lung conditions, should seek medical help if they develop flu-like symptoms. "It's very challenging to predict ... how and when virus activity will end or peak", said Dr. Gil Chavez, a state epidemiologist and deputy director for the Center of Infectious Diseases at the CDPH.

"It's not too late to get vaccinated and we urge all eligible, especially those in at-risk groups that include people aged 65 years or over, pregnant women, and those with certain chronic conditions, to take up the offer of the vaccine", the spokeswoman said. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub and rub your hands together well.

If you are sick, stay home and avoid contact with others. Germs spread this way. Keep in mind to wash your hands after you cough or sneeze. Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. "Louisiana is among the states with the highest confirmed illness through symptoms and laboratory surveillance".

To avoid overcrowding emergency departments, it's recommended patients check with their healthcare provider or an urgent care before going to the ER, and if coughing, wear a mask to the doctor's office.

"Studies show that if you get the flu vaccine and you do get the flu, you're much less likely to get as sick", Hensley added.

Doctors in West Michigan are asking people to do what they can to protect themselves from the influenza viruses. Vaccines are less protective if strains are different than predicted and unexpected mutations occur.

Meanwhile, the CDC reports the effectiveness of the flu vaccine typically ranges from 40 to 60 percent.
