Minnesota confirms first child death this flu season

12 Janvier 2018

If you have not received a flu shot yet, it's not too late.

One death was reported among ICU patients bringing the total deaths in intensive care facilities this winter to four.

Graham Munslow, clinical screening and immunisation manager for the Greater Manchester Health and Social Care Partnership, which covers an area affected by recent reports, said: "Yamagata is not in the vaccination for the elderly population so we could well start to see it in other age groups".

The prevalent strain circulating the state is classified as influenza A (H3N2), and is associated with more severe cases requiring hospitalization and death among seniors and young children than other strains.

For the first time, a cell-grown H3N2 vaccine reference virus was used to produce the H3N2 component of the cell-based vaccine, Flucelvax.

Further compounding the issue is this year's flu shot.

Dr. Michael Chen, a physician at The Portland Clinic in Tigard, tells FOX 12 more people are sick and have gotten the virus earlier than in years past. "And by the time they go there, they already have secondary complications".

"Looking at our numbers over the last couple of weeks and knowing there's a bit of a reporting delay, we're certainly on the upswing right now in terms of increasing activity for flu", she said of Ontario.

The state tracks only pediatric deaths due to the flu, and only one has been reported so far.

Local health care professionals are seeing a marked increase in the number of people visiting the emergency room for the flu or flu-like symptoms.

Alvarez said the flu season is worse this year than in other years.

Once again seniors, children and those with compromised immune systems were the most vulnerable to the flu.

The non-profit immunization group recently received a shipment of over 2,000 flu vaccines for adults, and has an additional stockpile reserved exclusively for children who do not have health insurance or can not otherwise afford the vaccine.

Prof Dingwall said: "The jab is not as effective because it is a new strain of flu".

"Rumors that the flu vaccine is not effective this year are misleading", said Ehresmann.

About 155,000 could die in 21 days at the height of the flu outbreak, which includes the devastating Aussie virus.

What are the symptoms?

You also DON'T need to visit anyone in the hospital if you have a runny nose - cough - sore throat or fever.
