Many of us are enjoying those fancy high-tech gadgets we got for Christmas.
While last year's push was to get Google's smart speaker lineup up to speed, this year's focus will be on the smart display. Sporting a tiny DLP projector that spits images onto its full colour see-through display, the Blade's uses waveguide optics to project a tiny display onto the right lens of some surprisingly normal-looking glasses. More than 5 billion consumer devices supporting digital assistants will be in use in 2018, with nearly 3 billion more added by 2021, according to IHS Markit.
For the moment, voice competitors to Amazon and Google remain largely in the wings. The devices then record user's command.
The only possible competitor to Alexa at this point is Google Home, but Alexa has a huge lead: over 4,000 devices can now be controlled by Alexa, the company said, while Google's total is around 1,500.
What are they using the devices for? Both look attractive enough, but since they're on the rear of the device it's easy to imagine that many users will never even see the colour of the rear - so we'd encourage picking your model based on the screen and price, not the finish.
There has also been a host of new smart cameras on show, many of which boast bigger megapixel lenses and better night vision. All you need to do is download the Alexa mobile app and you're good to go.
According to a Bloomberg report, analyst EMarketer estimates Google's Home products will control 25 percent of the 2018 smart speaker market share, which pales in comparison to Amazon's 68 percent market share with the Echo. You can also contact customer service to request deletion of your voice recordings. However, removing a Home Screen Card from your Alexa App does not delete voice recordings. In the future, it's plausible people could use Alexa for searches instead. Note that deleting your voice recordings does not remove your Alexa messages. "I'd love to be able to remove my staff from these meetings, and have them focusing on other, more pressing issues". When the microphone on/off button turns red, the microphone is off.
As for buttons, both devices keep it simple.
Between the branded monorail, the 15-foot-tall gumball machine and the two-story slide, it's hard not to notice Google's presence at CES 2018. Rather than opening your calendar, weather, traffic, and reminders, you can start your day by saying "hey Google" and it will walk you through your morning schedule, displaying calendar events, to-do items, traffic information for your commute, a rundown of the latest news and anything else you might want to know.
