Monson was well-respected by Mormons all over the world for his dedication to humanitarian causes, from disaster relief to the simplicity of urging members to bring comfort to someone who is lonely.
There have been 16 presidents, including Monson, since the founding of the LDS Church by Joseph Smith in 1830. "I hope I work effectively, but I never feel I have exhausted what I should be doing" (Gerry Avant, Church News, Feb. 9, 2008). He was a traditionalist that was known for strong storytelling, mostly about growing up in his native Salt Lake City and receiving visions from the Holy Spirit for his calling. Senior LDS delegations have met with AJC leadership in Jerusalem, as well.
"President Monson's values also guided the LDS Church, and set a high moral standard, as to how we will treat immigrants and refugees both inside and outside our borders". Survivors include three children, Thomas Monson, Ann Dibb and Clark Monson; eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
"President Monson had every one of the signs of an unassuming hireling of the Lord", the congregation said in an announcement. Service was his motto and humility his hallmark.
He served in the Navy at the close of World War II and received a bachelor's degree in business management from the University of Utah in 1948, later graduating with a master's degree in business administration from Brigham Young University. Romney took to social media to post about Monson's passing.
His wife, Frances Monson, died in May 2013. He was known for his love of show tunes, Boy Scouts and the Utah Jazz. He proceeded to tell me about the person who had died and how many funerals he attended that year. During his first year, the church backed California's Proposition 8, the ballot measure that defined marriage as strictly between a man and a woman.
Monson's death late Tuesday evening was announced by the church in an email from spokesman Eric Hawkins.
A successor to Thomas Monson's position has not yet been named. If he elects not to keep Monson's two counselors, Henry B. Eyring and Dieter Uchtdorf, they would go back to being regular members of the Quorum.
The second-longest serving apostle will be designated as the new president of the Quorum of the Twelve after the reorganization of the First Presidency. And I like to believe that on that July day, in a very insignificant setting of an informal chat at a retirement party, President Monson, once again, reached out to "the one". This would be Dallin H. Oaks, who has served for 33 years and nine months.
