The 90th Academy Award nominations were announced Tuesday morning, and a movie filmed in Mobile and Fairhope is up for four Oscars.

Guillermo del Toro's romantic fantasy film The Shape of Water led the Oscar race with 13 nominations, including Best Picture, but Academy members apparently only allowed themselves to take that one genre movie seriously this year.

Andrew Rosen, a Toronto-based producer on the film, says he's hopeful the Oscar nomination will expose his film to new audiences.

"It feels awesome to know that people not only have seen the film but really feel the film, and feel the experience I was trying to illustrate that's really important to a lot of people. Meanwhile, star Mary J. Blige picked up a best supporting actress nod, as well as best song nod (for the song 'Mighty River, ' co-written by Raphael Saadiq and Taura Stinson); she is reportedly the first person to be nominated for best performance and best song in the same year".

"Shape of Water" has been celebrated as a visual feast about a woman who falls in love with a odd river creature. Joining Stevens among Oscar nominees with local ties is Ann Arbor native Laura Checkoway, whose short film "Edith+Eddie" was nominated for Best Documentary, Short Subject.

The 90th Academy Awards ceremony will take place at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday, March 4, 2018 at 8pm EST hosted by Jimmy Kimmel and broadcast in the US on ABC.

This is our most exciting category, with three contenders - Frances McDormand ("Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri"), Saoirse Ronan ("Lady Bird") and Sally Hawkins ("The Shape of Water") - all in the mix.

Eric Fellner, nominated for his role in producing "Darkest Hour", told Reuters that government subsidy had helped to shore up the industry and allowed British talent to succeed on the global stage.

Twentieth Century Fox and its independent film units dominated the studio tally, with 27 nominations.

And while the Golden Globes failed to nominate Greta Gerwig for directing Lady Bird, which won the Best Comedy/Musical award-apparently that movie just directed itself-Gerwig earned a Best Director nod on top of Lady Bird's Best Picture nomination. He now holds five Oscars and is the most-nominated living person, second only to Walt Disney, who had 59 nominations.

After two years of controversy over a largely white Oscar line-up, people of color also did well.

Mary J. Blige attends the 24th Annual Screen Actors' Guild Awards at The Shrine Auditorium on January 21, 2018 in Los Angeles.

JAMES Franco has been snubbed by the Oscars, after scooping up the best actor in a comedy film award at both the Golden Globes and Critics' Choice Awards.

"We are thrilled and honored to be nominated for The Big Sick". While there are some very interesting nominees, including Meryl Streep's 21st nomination for her role in The Post, it's the best director category that has the most potential to make real waves in Hollywood. Gerwig is the first woman in the Best Director field since Kathryn Bigelow won for "The Hurt Locker" and the fifth woman ever to be nominated for the award. Phantom Thread surprised with a stronger showing across the board than had been expected at this point in the awards conversation.
