Lindsey Vonn fails to finish final race of her Olympic career

23 Février 2018

Both Mikaela Shiffrin and Lindsey Vonn raced the Alpine super-combined on Friday, the first time the two American skiers competed against each other at the Olympics, and nearly surely the last. Competing in what she says will be her final Olympic Games, Vonn is now sitting in first place in the combined event which could put her on the podium a second time at these Games. Both times are combined to determine the victor.

Goggia finished in a time of 1 minute, 39.22 seconds to hold off Mowinckel by 0.09 seconds.

Shiffrin's signature event is the slalom.

Hirscher was seeking to become just the fourth Alpine skier to win three golds at a single Winter Games, and the first man since Jean-Claude Killy 50 years ago.

She is 33, the oldest woman to ever win an Alpine medal at a Winter Games.

It's Meyers Taylor's third Olympic medal, tying her with Pat Martin (1948, 1952) and the late Steven Holcomb (2010, 2014) for the most in US bobsled history. She then made a major mistake traversing a critical section on the racecourse and lost much of the velocity she would need to stay close to Vonn.

Vonn was just 17 when she first competed in the Olympics, appearing at the 2002 Games in Salt Lake City. Vonn couldn't flesh out what feels like an incomplete resume after her knee injury took out her prime Olympic opportunity.

"It's incredible what she's able to accomplish, and she's so young", Vonn said. "Right now we are the best nation in the world in ski cross and have been for a couple of years", Leman said. "Of course, I'd have loved a gold medal but, honestly, this is awesome and I'm so proud".

Sharpe posted the top two scores in the women's final at Phoenix Snow Park, with the 95.80 she put up during her second run the best of the finals. "I'm going to be thinking of my skiing and do my best in the last few World Cup races of the season", Shiffrin said.

His winning margin of 1.27 seconds in the men's giant slalom was the largest Olympics lead in 50 years.

Looking ahead: Vonn's next event is the much-anticipated Alpine combined, in which she'll compete alongside Mikaela Shiffrin.

"I had a huge smile on my face this morning", Vonn said between legs, adding, "I'm going to give it hell and maybe I can pull out a miracle". She has four World Cup wins - two of them at this venue.

The six-time world champion had filled the only gap in his resume with golds in the combined and giant slalom in Pyeongchang and was favorite to claim a third Thursday. "To be able to do this after the season that they had is wonderful for me", said Myhrer, slalom bronze medalist in Vancouver eight years ago.

Gisin's victory was confirmed when the United States' Lindsey Vonn, the leader after the downhill segment, failed to finish her slalom run. And I think he would be proud of that'.

'I mean who knows what will happen in four years, it's a long time from now. For Lindsey Vonn, the goal is a controlled run that will keep her there. It had a daunting, steep pitch, which would usually favor a more technically gifted slalom skier like Shiffrin.

"I wanted desperately to win for him today", she said. "When you're older you have a different appreciation for life and the experiences you've had".
