Louisville Bows Out of ACC Tournament and Now Waits for a Call

10 Mars 2018

First-ranked Virginia knocks men's basketball out of the ACC conference tournament with a 75-58 win in the quarterfinals.

The Cavaliers will be looking for their third championship game appearance since 2014.

The two teams split the regular-season series, as Providence won the first matchup 81-72 at home, but they dropped an 84-74 decision at the end of February. The Cavaliers have been the most consistent team in the ACC all season, and they should be at their best when they play their quarterfinal game Thursday at noon.

On the season, Virginia basketball averages 67.3 points, 32.6 rebounds and 13.6 assists per game.

With leading scorer Kyle Guy back following a brief injury scare, the nation's No. 1 team is off to a strong postseason start. Jerome made the first two free throws and missed the third on objective, but the Cavaliers were called for a lane violation.

But after running away with the regular-season crown by four games, they probably have little else on the line in Brooklyn. Defensively, Clemson basketball yields 65.3 points per game against the opposing teams. On defense, the Cavaliers held Louisville to 35.7 percent shooting, making for a 38-27 Virginia lead at halftime. The best defense in the country is better than it has ever been, and had one of its greatest all-time efforts in limiting Clemson to 36 points during a 25-point blowout win January 23. Now, the Cardinals want revenge. "They could've felt sorry for themselves, and not once the whole time through the last four or five months did they do that". Virginia has used its smothering top-ranked defense to squash opponents, but Clemson appears to be peaking at the right time. Hunter's 3-pointer was true, the Cavaliers led 54-41 and Hall had his fifth assist. But the Cardinals would make five of their last six shots, Quentin Snider would hit both free throw attempts with 15 seconds to go. The Cardinals are going to be in the NCAA Tournament for the 43rd time in school history. However, if the Tigers have any hope of pulling off the upset and advancing to the ACC Conference tournament final, they are going to need a lot more than Reed.

Florida State actually got off to a good start, aided by the Cardinals' lack of attention to detail. We haven't officially decided anything yet, but more than anything, these 14 players, with everything that they've been through this year, you can't tell me that they don't deserve an opportunity to play in the NCAA Tournament. Playing with a brace on the left knee he sprained Saturday against Notre Dame, Guy scored a game-high 19 points on 7-of-14 shooting, 4-of-6 from beyond the 3-point arc.
