March Madness: Virginia, 'Nova, Kansas, Xavier earn top seeds

12 Mars 2018

Coach Avery Johnson's squad will be the No. 9 seed in the East region, and thus will face a No. 8 seed in the Hokies. (The third loss was at Ohio State, 82-64, November 16.) They did not win their first game until the calendar flipped to 2018 (Jan. 1 over Southern).

"We don't have a lot of upper class leadership on this team, so the ones that we have, Phil and Terance, are guys that are going to have to give us a lot of leadership (in the NCAA Tournament)", FSU coach Leonard Hamilton said after his team's elimination from the ACC tournament. If there's one game they'd probably like to have back this time around, it's a 51-49 loss at home in January to Notre Dame.

Villanova, Kansas and Xavier joined Virginia as the top seeds.

Baylor lost four of five down the stretch to play itself out. While their first year in the AAC was a regular season success, the Shockers didn't win the conference or the conference tournament.

The victor likely faces Virginia, the No. 1 overall seed in the tournament, in the second round on Sunday.

Despite the fact that the league has four teams ranked in the top 17, three of which in the top 10, there's been a narrative all year that the conference is a shell of its normal standards.

Format: The Selection Show will begin with the announcement of all 68 tournament teams, followed by the release of the NCAA Tournament brackets and game matchups with analysis, interviews and reactions from the teams.

First, it will be broadcast by TBS, not CBS, the longtime network home of the tournament. Fans can also stream the show on NCAA March Madness Live app.

Start times for the games are not known at this time. I doubt the committee puts a scenario were two SEC teams could meet during the opening weekend but they've done crazier things. The tourney kicks off at noon with a first-round game on CBS.

The women's NCAA tournament 64-team field will be announced Monday at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN.

Both Purdue and Butler were selected as an at-large bid.

Miami is a lock to make the field this year. But Davidson's only hope was to win the conference tournament - and Stephen Curry's alma mater did just that. Those on the cusp of making it include Louisville, USC, Marquette, Arizona State, and Syracuse. MI took the Big Ten's automatic bid by winning the conference tournament at Madison Square Garden.
