South Korea Praises China's Role in North Nuclear Talks

13 Mars 2018

USA officials vowed Sunday they would not make any concessions to North Korea ahead of the summit and would continue to pressure North Korea.

"North Korea mentioned an assurance of the regime's safety. and China needs the South Korean side to help clarify that so it knows what to do to meet those needs.as well as how North Korea plans to denuclearise", Cheng said.

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said the US expects North Korea to be in direct touch after President Donald Trump agreed to Kim Jong Un's invitation to meet, urging patience as preparations for the potentially historic handshake are worked out.

While Chung briefed Xi, South Korea sent the head of its National Intelligence Service, Suh Hoon, to Japan to meet with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

"If North Korea accepts inspections, Japan will fully cooperate in financial aid and other things so that the IAEA would be able to conduct inspections immediately", Kono told reporters.

The proposed meeting between Trump and Kim Jong Un is expected to lead to a path of peace in the Korean peninsula.

"Through the inter-Korean summit and the U.S". -South Korean military exercises "a remarkable step forward" and a result of Trump's tough approach.

"Once again, we expect that China will continue to play an active and leading role and the South Korean government will continue to coordinate closely with China". Kim's father Kim Jong Il said in talks with the South in 2000 that he could tolerate their presence. "I feel that I have arrived 100 percent", Choi said.

In the meantime, North Korean authorities "seem to be putting particular emphasis on the regime's founding ideology to prevent unrest from the residents in advance and make them trust only in the ruling party", Cho said.

"President XI told me he appreciates that the U.S.is working to solve the problem diplomatically rather than going the ominous alternative", Trump wrote about China's leader.

Trump last week agreed to meet with Kim by the end of May to discuss Pyongyang's denuclearisation - which it put on the table in exchange for security guarantees - and predicted the talks would be a "tremendous success".

Chung had spoken to Yang Jiechi, China's top diplomat, for three hours prior to meeting Mr Xi, the South Koreans said.

On Sunday, CIA Director Mike Pompeo appeared on CBS's "Face the Nation" with Margaret Brennan to discuss the White House's strategy on North Korea.

Trump agreed to meet Kim Jong Un by the end of May and the two Koreas will hold a summit by the end of April.

Choi also said it was a surreal experience for him to see North Koreans at the athletes' village and at the games.

"The reported outcomes of those meetings are powerful signs of hope compared to dangerously escalating tensions and military confrontation of the recent past, and provide major encouragement to President Moon Jae-in's diplomatic engagement with the North", the World Council of Churches said in a statement.
