13 Avril 2018

Gold Coast, Apr 13 (UNI) Indian shooters continued to sparkle at the Commonwealth Games 2018, here, clinching two gold medals and one silver on Friday.

Sushil Kumar staked his claim to be India's greatest individual sportsman with victory over Johannes Botha of South Africa in the men's 74 kilograms.

Unfortunately, the world ranked number 39 was not able to improve on his fifth-place finish at Glasgow 2014, coming in ninth, +4:53 behind 2014 Commonwealth Games silver medal-winning New Zealander, Samuel Gaze. She was followed by Northern Ireland's Kirsty Barr took silver with 37 while Sarah Wales' Sarah Wixey, who had topped the qualifications with a total of 69, scored 28 to get the bronze medal.

Kumar began the day with a comfortable win against Canadian opponent Jevon Belfour.

The 18-year-old was eying a clean sweep of the apparatus finals, which would have bumped her tally to six gold, but fell short in the clubs and ribbon events at Coomera Indoor Sports Centre.

The Commonwealth Games has banned unauthorised use of syringes in a bid to stamp out doping.

Meanhwile, Teajaswini Sawant and Anjum Moudgil began India's medal rush on Day 9 of CWG.

Aware was a convincing victor over Canada's Steven Takahashi with Ebikewenimo Welson of Nigeria and Muhammad Bilal of Pakistan taking the bronze medals.

"Against New Zealand too, we don't want to focus too much on what they bring to the table, but we want to focus on our own strengths and ensure we fight till the last whistle", asserted the 25-year-old midfielder.

At the same time, defending champion Babita Phogat had to be satisfied with the silver medal in the women's wrestling competition of 53kg.

Maharashtra's Tejaswini Sawant won silver in the finals of the women's 50m rifle prone, finishing behind Singapore's Martina Lindsay Veloso. Many expected him to be draping the gold medal over the neck of fellow Jamaican Thompson, who had matched his feat at Rio de Janeiro in 2016 by winning the 100-200 double.
