Knicks dismiss head coach Jeff Hornacek

14 Avril 2018

The New York Knicks are going to reach out to Villanova's Jay Wright about their head coaching position, which is open after Knicks management fired Jeff Hornacek, the New York Daily News reported.

The report also references several additional candidates for the Knicks opening, highlighted by Mark Jackson, Jerry Stackhouse, David Fizdale and current Clippers head coach Doc Rivers.

League sources said Mills and Perry notified Hornacek following the team's return to suburban New York City after a flight back from Cleveland.

Hornacek had preached patience earlier on Wednesday, saying he was confident the Knicks were on the verge of being competitive.

Neither of those things happened.

For now, though, all we can do is look at the information in front of us, albeit with a cautious eye.

Hornacek was hired in 2016 by Phil Jackson and lasted just one more season after Jackson and the team parted ways last summer.

There's also a strong argument, if Wright were to entertain making the jump, that the Knicks don't have anywhere near the best job that is or will be available. "I love it here". They didn't even wait until the morning after. She has covered sports in NY for more than 20 years.

What went wrong? Everything. He struggled with putting cohesive and balanced lineups together, often playing multiple awful defenders at the same time.

The fact that Blatt didn't get the full backing of his players in Cleveland could be cause for concern, but that was a team of hard-headed veterans. That led to him getting dealt to the Hornets at his lowest value, while he was under contract for a very affordable $1.5 million a year.

Jeff Hornacek got caught in the middle. That's a story for another day.

Without much talent to work with, the Knicks never established a clear identity, frustrating Hornacek with their defensive inconsistency (they are ranked 22nd in defence) and looking a step behind the league's best offenses. They lost more than 50 games and missed the playoffs both seasons under Hornacek.

In his young National Basketball Association career, Tim Hardaway Jr. can already be classified as a journeyman. It was time for that transition to end and for the new regime to install a head coach that will mold the identity of the franchise moving forward.

Hopefully, the next Knicks coach will stay longer than two years.

Jackson has close relationships with many in the Knicks organization and would be a popular hire among a significant portion of the fan base.

The Knicks did not give a timeline for hiring a new coach. I'm on board with their decisions. The onus now falls on Perry and Mills to make sure they find the right coach to do so. Let the search begin.
