President Trump: US launches strikes on Syria

15 Avril 2018

Strong words from President Trump there.

Rejoining TPP would also help the USA on that very question of managing the economic relationship with China.

America does not seek an indefinite presence in Syria under no circumstances. And then yesterday, he told a group of lawmakers that he was looking into rejoining the TPP. Including the US, the member countries represented approximately 40 percent of global trade. It is sad to think that Donald Trump was mortified into seeking the presidency.

HOLLEYMAN: My sense is he's taking another look for two reasons.

The U.S. missile strike a year ago, which targeted the airfield from which Syrian aircraft had launched their gas attack, was meant to deter Assad from further use of chemical weapons. Secondly, national security interests.

Anatoly Antonov, Russia's ambassador to the USA, said, "We are being threatened".

In a recent interview with "Fox News Sunday" moderator Chris Wallace, radio commentator Rush Limbaugh speculated that the "primary objective" of Special Counsel Robert Mueller is to protect "Hillary (Clinton) and (former president) Obama" from prosecution for their knowledge and involvement in the alleged campaign to sabotage Trump.

HOLLEYMAN: Politics around trade have always been incredibly complicated. But as president, Trump now has ordered missile strikes twice against Syria - once last April and again Friday night - without any suggestion that he needs congressional approval. He added in a statement, "We warned that such actions will not be left without consequences".

KING: Do you think those 11 countries are going to welcome the USA back with open arms?

HOLLEYMAN: No, I think clearly those countries will make some demands. The Russian Foreign Ministry called the reports of Saturday's chemical attack "fake news", while the Russian military investigating the area found no traces of chlorine or nerve agents, any eyewitnesses who could confirm their use or anyone who might have been affected. We thank them both. Turkey is a USA ally despite considering certain Kurdish groups in the region to be terrorists while the US has backed those groups as a fighting force against ISIS. "Now we have an opportunity to re-engage on TPP, which is not a bad thing".

"It's hard to bring part of the pact and renegotiate it", he said, calling it a "well-balanced pact" that carefully addressed the needs of the current 11 member nations.

KING: It'll be tough.

"Why would the president want to rejoin a trade agreement that is really a regulatory agreement negotiated by his regulation-loving predecessor?"

"Would only join TPP if the deal were substantially better than the deal offered to Pres. Obama", Trump tweeted late Thursday.

"There is an open door for the United States to rethink and take advantage of the window of opportunity", Enrique Pena Nieto suggested in Lima. He argued bilateral deals offered better terms for USA businesses and workers, and signaled an intention to raise trade barriers. It would give the pact a great deal more heft and help position it as an economic counterweight to China, which increasingly dominates the Asia-Pacific region. "This is done by wealthy people that want to take advantage of us and that want to sign another partnership". I mean, TPP was created to be the alternative to the closed Chinese system. A spokeswoman for Singapore's Ministry of Trade and Industry said it welcomed the USA interest. Thank you so much, sir.
