Risks loom for Comey's book blitz

16 Avril 2018

A searing memoir by former Federal Bureau of Investigation Director James Comey, who was sacked last May by U.S. President Donald Trump, is due to be published next week. "He lied to Congress under OATH", Trump tweeted.

Comey's book "A Higher Loyalty", details his conversations with the President, mocks Trump's appearance, and slams the "forest fire that is the Trump presidency".

Clinton beforehand has talked about that she thinks the letter Comey despatched to Congress on October 28, 2016, saying that the FBI could possibly be attempting once more on the e mail investigation, merely 11 days sooner than the election, killed her chances of worthwhile.

Trump's efforts to cast Comey and law enforcement as soft on Clinton corruption, of course, are all about creating an alt-narrative to discredit Mueller's investigation, which grew out of the one Comey previously oversaw.

Comey told ABC News that he publicly discussed in 2016 the FBI's investigation into Hillary Clinton's email server because he believed at that time that she would win the upcoming election, and he wanted to prevent her presidency from being seen as "illegitimate".

About 15 minutes later, Trump blasted Comey for leaving many questions unanswered.

White House officials were scouring news reports and reaching out to allies who have copies of the book, hoping to home in on passages that they believe undercut Comey's credibility or make him seem sympathetic to Democrats. "He said, 'If there's even a 1% chance that my wife thinks that's true, that's awful.' And I remember thinking, 'How could your wife think there's a 1% chance that you were with prostitutes peeing on each other in Moscow?'" he said.

Asked how freaky that meeting with Trump was, Comey said: "Very weird". "(Obama) looked directly at me", Comey recalled, according to The Washington Post.

Comey also said the allegations in the dossier had not been verified at the time he left the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Clinton herself has cited Comey's handling of the email probe as a reason she lost the election.

"The pee tape is also just an avatar for the idea that the Russians have kompromat on him, and people I think for very good reason suspect the Russians very well might have kompromat on him", said Tim Miller, a Republican strategist and Trump opponent, using the Russian word for intelligence used to blackmail targets. (This is in keeping with Trump's calls for Clinton's prosecution since the election.) Now, we all know Trump fired Comey out of rage over the Russian Federation probe.

Kellyanne Conway, one of Mr. Trump's advisers, hit on the same theme.

The first tweet Sunday morning suggested that Comey's announcement days before the election that the probe into Hillary Clinton's emails was being reopened was a veiled attempt to get a job with Clinton. "Really weird. It was nearly an out of body experience for me".

"I never asked Comey for Personal Loyalty", tweeted Trump, who purportedly asked Comey for a loyalty pledge. After hearing this rationale, one former Clinton campaign aide, Zerlina Maxwell, told MSNBC on Friday: "It's infuriating".

Comey paints a devastating portrait of a president who built "a cocoon of alternative reality that he was busily wrapping around all of us". "I'm a flawed human being, but there is literally zero chance that my wife would think that was true".
