Bolivia calls United Nations meeting over Syria strike threat

20 Avril 2018

The World Health Organization said on Wednesday that 43 people had died in Saturday's attack on the town of Douma from "symptoms consistent with exposure to highly toxic chemicals", and more than 500 in all had been treated.

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said Monday that the President still wants to pull United States troops from Syria once ISIS is defeated there and rejected the notion that his comments about a future withdrawal may have emboldened the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Peskov wouldn't say if Moscow could use a Russia-U.S. military hotline to avoid casualties in a case of a U.S. blow, saying only that "the hotline exists and has remained active". The new tweet from President Trump immediately boosted stocks and other risky assets and is being interpreted as a potential climb-down from American military action, which had seemed imminent. Donald Trump tweeted, "Get ready Russian Federation because the missiles are coming nice, new and smart. Because we have seen that red lines that go unenforced just encourage further provocative action by Assad", he told reporters in the Capitol on Wednesday. His Russian and Iranian backers will ensure that.

"We are not surprised by such a reckless escalation from a regime like the United States which has fostered and continues to foster terrorism in Syria", a foreign ministry official said, according to state news agency SANA.

"We don't simply up and leave. the diplomats without a leg to stand on against people who have no diplomatic inclination", Mattis said.

The United States and its allies France and Britain want to send a clear and definitive message to that the future use of chemical weapons will not be tolerated.

"Russia vows to shoot down any and all missiles fired at Syria".

The Russian military said later it had observed movements of USA naval forces in the Gulf. "These are not the actions of a man; they are crimes of a monster instead", Trump said.

Since the attack in Douma on Saturday, Trump showed a visceral reaction to graphic images of pallid children struggling for breath and frantically being doused with water by first responders.

Moscow calls the chemical attack allegations a "provocation".

"The only thing I worry about is that it's not going to happen", he said about a possible military response.

The targets of that strike included Syrian aircraft, aircraft shelters, petroleum and logistical storage facilities, ammunition supply bunkers, air defence systems and radar. Might this fact have motivated Israel's alleged attack on a Syrian air base a day and a half after the Syrian regime was again suspected of using a nerve agent against a rebel position in a Damascus suburb?

McKenzie said 105 US and allied missiles were fired, of which 66 were Tomahawk cruise missiles launched from aboard three US Navy ships and one Navy submarine. This was the first significant use of chemical weapons in a war in which 100,000 tons of chemical agents would be used by both sides to kill nearly 30,000 soldiers and injure 500,000.

"Our relationship with Russian Federation is worse now than it has ever been, and that includes the Cold War", Trump said in a tweet.

Officials say the president is also considering targeting supply flights sent by Iran and economic sanctions against Russian Federation and Syria.

The losses followed a strong session on Tuesday in which stocks rallied after a conciliatory speech by Chinese President Xi Jinping raised hopes a US-China trade war could be averted.
