Here Comes Facebook's Annual Apps Fest. There's Just One Problem

Facebook has reported huge surges in advertising revenue and user numbers in the first quarter of 2018.

Schroeder said it was clear Facebook had not done enough to ensure its tools could "potentially being used for harm" or take a broad enough view of its responsibility.

Net income attributable to Facebook shareholders rose in the first quarter to $4.99 billion, or $1.69 per share, from $3.06 billion, or $1.04 per share, a year earlier.

The earnings report followed weeks of tumult for Facebook, after a controversy erupted last month when The New York Times and other news outlets reported that millions of Facebook users' private information had been harvested by Cambridge Analytica, a political firm with ties to the Trump campaign. One would have thought Facebook, after being exposed as the latest in a long line of corporate Anti-Christs for quietly selling private data of Facebook users to Cambridge Analytica, would be punished similarly. Facebook's Schroepfer replied: "We did not read all the terms and conditions". Facebook has since began informing users if their data was passed to Cambridge Analytica.

Facebook's facial recognition technology detects untagged faces and prompts both the person posting an image and the users appearing in it to apply the relevant name tags.

He said the company's behaviour was not meant to be interpreted as an attempt to stop the story becoming public, despite letters having been sent to The Guardian in March threatening to sue.

For now, the answer appears to be no. Facebook released its quarterly financials Wednesday, which showed that, at least as far as investor and advertising money is concerned, the company that started in Zuckerberg's dorm room is on solid ground.

Facebook stock was up more than 7 percent in after-hours trading following earnings.

Earlier this month, Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg told USA lawmakers that Kogan violated his agreement with the platform and that it was a "big issue".

Others aren't convinced. Oliver Coen, a watch company based in London, gets more than 80 percent of its sales in the USA, and puts half its advertising dollars into Facebook. Law enforcement and congressional committees are conducting ongoing investigations into Facebook's role in swaying the opinions of American voters.

During that hearing, Mr Zuckerberg said Facebook would investigate "tens of thousands" of apps to discover if any other companies had accessed data in a similar way to Cambridge Analytica. "It's an important issue", he said. Facebook's United Kingdom policy director Simon Milner and head of product policy Monika Bicker have previously answered questions, but Collins has repeatedly urged the Facebook CEO himself to step up.
