Donald Trump announces June 12 summit in Singapore with North Korean leader

11 Mai 2018

"We want to thank [North Korea Supreme Leader] Kim Jong Un, who really was excellent to these three incredible people".

After their meeting with Trump, the three men were expected to go to the Walter Reed Medical Center in Maryland for further evaluation and medical treatment, according to White House Press Secretary Lindsay Walters.

At the same time Gardner said, Mr Trump's eyes were wide open about the risks of failure and the need to be clear that denuclearization means abandoning nuclear weapons. Their families were not on hand for the ceremony.

Breaking his silence over the planned meeting with United States President Donald Trump, North Korean Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un said that he was looking forward to meeting the US President, which is a positive development.

The Americans' release came during Pompeo's second visit to North Korea this year.

In Seoul, South Korea's presidential office, Cheong Wa Dae, welcomed the announcement of the summit.

Trump announced Wednesday that the demilitarized zone between the Koreas would not host the summit.

Some analysts have predicted that the summit could take place in Marina Bay Sands since it is owned by one of the POTUS' biggest campaign donors, Sheldon Adelson.

North Korea is still technically at war with the United States and its ally South Korea because the 1950-53 Korean War ended in a truce, not a treaty. Their arrests were widely seen as politically motivated and had compounded the dire state of relations over the isolated nation's nuclear weapons.

Tensions between the US and North Korea have eased in recent months and Trump accepted the invitation for a face-to-face meeting with Kim back in March.

He added that while Mr Trump's has recently praised Kim, the administration is not ignoring the North's abysmal human rights record.

Trump and Kim could discuss the issue of a peace treaty as part of negotiations to dismantle the nuclear program.

"I think it's historic at many levels", Minnesota GOP Chair Jennifer Carnahan said.

The release capped a dramatic day of diplomacy in Pyongyang.

The North's state TV broadcaster said Kim highly praised the USA president during the meeting for showing interest in resolving issues through dialogue and "with new alternatives" and expressed appreciation to him for taking an "active" approach in the anticipated summit between the two countries. His death escalated US-North Korea tensions.

Kim Dong-chul, a pastor in his early 60s, was detained in 2015 on spying charges, and was then sentenced to 10 years hard labour.

During the Wednesday visit, Pompeo secured the release of three American prisoners that had been held in North Korea.

The date, June 12, gives staffers in the White House and at Foggy Bottom a month to prepare. His parents are suing North Korea over his death. The trio, along with medical personnel that included a psychiatrist, were cloistered in the middle of Pompeo's plane in a small section of 12 business class-size seats cordoned off by curtains on both ends.

"I will be there to greet them", Trump tweeted. This president's grasp on reality is so warped that he's even unfairly blamed former President Barack Obama for failing to get the hostages back, even though two of the hostages were captured under Trump's watch. We looked them straight in the eye and they said to us verbatim, 'God bless America.

Spokesman Yoon Young-chan also called upon the North to release six South Koreans it has in prison.
