Senior North Korean official spotted at airport, reportedly heading to US

"It will happen!" Trump tweeted at about 1am South African time.

Talks of reviving the planned summit seem back on track, as U.S. officials continue to meet with North Korean counterparts at the DMZ this week.

But North Korea watchers have previously warned that things have been moving too fast, and urged Washington to hold more preparatory meetings in the run-up to a formal summit, CNN reported.

The United States has struggled to slow the isolated country's weapons programs, which have become a security priority for Washington given Pyongyang's promise to develop a nuclear-tipped missile capable of hitting the USA mainland.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in could also be going to Singapore next month for a three-way summit with his USA and North Korean counterparts next month, a government official in Seoul said on Monday. "But that's not all bad", said Max Baucus, a former Democratic senator from Montana who also served as US Ambassador to China from 2014 to 2017.

The Post said the talks at the border would continue on Monday and Tuesday at Tongilgak, the North's building in Panmunjom, where the truce suspending the 1950-53 Korean War was signed.

In Mr Kim and Mr Moon's first, upbeat meeting on 27 April, they agreed to seek the "complete denuclearisation" of the Korean peninsula - but did not define what that meant, or how that would proceed.

Hours after meeting with relatives of the abductees on the day, Abe said he "conveyed their feelings" to Trump over the phone. South Korea and China account for nearly all of North Korea's land borders, so their support is essential for enforcing sanctions ramped up previous year after Mr Kim declared the ability to strike the United States with a nuclear weapon.

The impersonator said Kim's rise as the third leader of North Korea in 2011 has proved lucrative for him, jump starting a new career in films, commercials and private functions, most often in his home town of Hong Kong.

A former USA director of national intelligence, James Clapper, also on CBS, expressed concern Pyongyang may demand the removal or scaling back of American troops in South Korea in exchange for denuclearization.

While admitting this option remained unlikely, Lord Hague stated Kim could agree to this plan if a formal treaty were ratified in the US Senate to provide a "security guarantee".

Still, with only a few weeks left until the scheduled summit, such talks are unlikely to reconcile the differing positions over Pyongyang's nuclear arsenal, he said.

The announcement sees the US apparently reverse its previous cancelation of a planned meeting between Kim Jong Un and Donald Trump, slated to take place in Singapore on June 12, on Thursday.

But North Korean state media subsequently reported on Kim's "fixed will" that a summit with Trump should go ahead.

Amid stalled June 12 summit talks with North Korea, the chasm on the timetable of denuclearization is as wide as "immediately" in the goals of President Donald Trump vs. Trump, who has since teased that the summit might still happen, tweeted about the diplomatic efforts in North Korea late Sunday afternoon, expressing his optimism that the US team's arrangements will pan out.

According to reports, Trump has demanded that Pyongyang carry out a swift denuclearisation approach, while North Korea reportedly favours a gradual drawdown. Libya agreed to abandon its nuclear program in return for sanctions relief in 2003, seen by Pyongyang as a direct cause of the downfall of leader Muammar Qaddafi and his death in 2011.

Trump dismissed the so-called Libya model. Roy Blunt, Missouri Republican, on "Fox News Sunday". "He's going to run this the way he sees fit".

Experts say that after those working-level talks, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo could meet with Kim Yong-chol, a vice central committee chairman of the North's ruling Workers' Party, for final preparations.

Earlier, Japan's Kyodo news agency quoted Abe as saying that the two leaders had agreed to cooperate to make the summit between the US president and North Korean leader meaningful.

The results of this week's parallel talks are likely to dictate whether the June 12 summit between Trump and Kim is possible, according to a U.S. official familiar with the ongoing deliberations.
