After meeting Kim Yong Chol, Pompeo had said the path to better relations between the USA and North Korea could take some time. He was greeted by White House Chief of Staff John F. Kelly and Andrew Kim, a CIA official in charge of the agency's Korea Mission Center. "I haven't seen the letter yet".
North Korea's flurry of diplomatic activity following a torrid run in nuclear weapons and missile tests in 2017 suggests that Kim is eager for sanctions relief to build his economy and the global legitimacy the summit with Trump would provide.
Gen Kim Yong-chol's visit to Washington came a day after he met US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in NY. The President's hand size is something he has previously defended. But Trump said he didn't like that Kim Jong Un had met Thursday in Pyongyang with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
Did Kim, a third-generation hereditary leader, think Trump would share his love for lavish gestures and things grandiose?
Trump said he expects the North Korean delegation to travel to Washington on Friday to deliver a letter from Kim Jong Un, according to a pool report. The United States has sanctioned the former spy leader for his suspected role in the cyberattacks on American companies.
Kim Yong Chol, who is making his first United States visit, is the most senior North Korean on USA soil since Vice Marshal Jo Myong Rok met then-president Bill Clinton in 2000. That session did not lead to a meeting between Clinton and the elder Kim. Kim has already had two meetings each with Chinese leader Xi Jinping and South Korean President Moon Jae-in.
The war ended in an armistice and divided the Korean Peninsula into two along the 38th parallel.
Trump predicted the upcoming meeting in Singapore would likely be the first of many. "But we'll see. We did discuss the ending of the Korean War", he said. I never said it goes in one meeting.
Trump says his meeting with the most senior North Korean to visit the White House in 18 years lasted longer than expected.
"I was surprised to see the approval rating for Trump has increased".
Both sides have committed themselves to the "denuclearisation" of the Korean peninsula, but it is far from clear if Mr. Trump's mission to secure Pyongyang's complete disarmament can be aligned with Mr. Kim's quest to win global respect and protection.
The rivals also agreed at a meeting of senior officials at the border village of Panmunjom to establish a liaison office at the North Korean border town of Kaesong and hold sports talks on fielding combined teams for some sports at the Asian Games in August, as they continue to take steps toward reconciliation.
Kim, meanwhile, has held meetings of his own.
North Korea, whose nuclear ambitions have been a source of tension for decades, has made advances in missile technology in recent years and its nuclear arsenal now threatens the United States.
Frenetic meetings - Pompeo has scheduled a news conference on Thursday, at the end of his meetings with Kim.
North Korea is estimated to have more than a dozen nuclear weapons. The sustained support among conservatives is notable at a time when Trump is pursuing a meeting with Kim, which is supported by liberals, Kang said. The North Korean leader added that he hopes to "solve problems with efficient and constructive dialogue and negotiation".
